FIA Confirm Penalty Points for Three F1 Stars in Dutch Grand Prix Fallout

The FIA has confirmed that three Formula 1 drivers have received penalty points on their superlicences following separate incidents during the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

Franco Colapinto, Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson were all punished after the stewards investigated incidents involving yellow-flag conditions during Sunday’s race. The penalties have changed the drivers’ positions in the championship’s penalty-point standings and could have implications if further offences occur during the remainder of the season.

Colapinto was the biggest points recipient of the three. The Alpine driver was handed three penalty points during the race, taking his total to four over the relevant 12-month period. Two of those points came after he overtook another driver while yellow flags were being displayed following Max Verstappen’s opening-lap incident.

Colapinto then received another penalty point later in the race after the stewards determined that he had failed to slow sufficiently while yellow flags were active. The additional punishment pushed him to four points, placing him among the drivers with the highest current totals.

Lindblad was also involved in the opening-lap incident. The Racing Bulls driver received two penalty points for overtaking under double-waved yellow flags. His manoeuvre occurred during the same period in which Colapinto was investigated.

The two drivers were also given drive-through penalties as a consequence of their opening-lap infringements. For Lindblad, the two points represented his first penalty points in Formula 1, meaning he now has two points recorded against his superlicence.

Lawson was the third driver affected by the FIA’s post-race decisions. The Racing Bulls driver received one penalty point after being found guilty of failing to slow appropriately for yellow flags later in the race.

Lawson’s punishment means his total has now increased to three penalty points. He also received a 10-second race penalty in connection with the incident.

The latest decisions highlight the importance of drivers responding correctly when yellow flags are displayed. Such warnings are used when there is an incident or hazard on track, requiring competitors to reduce their speed and exercise additional caution.

Following the Dutch Grand Prix, Colapinto sits on four penalty points, level with Oliver Bearman and Kimi Antonelli at the top of the current standings. Lawson is among several drivers on three points, while Lindblad has two.

Under the FIA’s penalty-point system, drivers can accumulate a maximum of 12 points within a 12-month period before an automatic one-race ban is triggered. Individual points remain on a driver’s record for 12 months before expiring.

The Dutch Grand Prix therefore leaves Colapinto, Lindblad and Lawson with additional pressure heading into the next races. Any further infringements could increase their totals and move them closer to the threshold that results in a race suspension.

With the 2026 season continuing after the summer break, the three drivers will now need to avoid further offences while trying to maintain their progress on the track.
