Carlos Sainz ‘set to sign’ massive contract before Dutch Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz could be on the verge of securing his Formula 1 future with Williams, with reports suggesting the Spanish driver is expected to agree a new contract before the Dutch Grand Prix. The development would bring an end to months of uncertainty surrounding his position within the team and could provide an important boost for Williams ahead of the remainder of the 2026 season.
Sainz joined Williams after leaving Ferrari and entered the 2026 campaign with expectations that the team could continue progressing under Formula 1’s new technical regulations. However, Williams has struggled for performance this year, leaving Sainz’s long-term future less certain than initially expected.
Recent reports indicate that Williams is prepared to offer Sainz a substantial financial package in an effort to keep him at the team. One report has claimed that the proposed deal could be worth around โฌ30 million per year, significantly higher than his current estimated salary. If completed, the agreement would place Sainz among the better-paid drivers on the Formula 1 grid.
The situation has attracted particular attention because Sainz’s current contract reportedly contains a performance-related clause that could give him an opportunity to leave if a stronger option becomes available. That has made his future one of the talking points during the 2026 driver market.
Williams’ decision to secure Sainz would also give the team greater stability. On Tuesday, Williams confirmed that Alex Albon had signed a contract extension to remain with the team through the 2027 season. With Albon now committed, retaining Sainz would allow Williams to maintain continuity with its current driver pairing rather than entering another major reshuffle.
The timing of the reported Sainz agreement is also significant. The Dutch Grand Prix is approaching, and Williams will be hoping to turn its fortunes around after a difficult period. Neither of its drivers has finished higher than 15th across the last four races, while the team has failed to score points since the Monaco Grand Prix.
For Sainz, remaining with Williams would represent a commitment to the team’s long-term project rather than an immediate move to another competitor. His experience and race-winning background make him an important asset as Williams attempts to rebuild its competitiveness.
However, it is important to stress that the reported agreement had not been officially confirmed at the time of the reports. The story remains based on paddock speculation and media reports, meaning the final terms could still change before Williams makes an announcement.
If the deal is eventually completed before the Dutch Grand Prix, it would remove one of the major questions surrounding the 2027 F1 driver market. With Albon already confirmed, a new contract for Sainz would give Williams a settled lineup and allow the team to focus more fully on improving its car.
For now, all eyes will be on Williams and Sainz as the Dutch Grand Prix approaches, with the reported contract potentially becoming one of the biggest stories of the weekend.
