Mick Schumacher’s next chapter in motorsport has taken shape, with the German driver set to continue his career in IndyCar in 2027 as Formula 1 pays tribute to his legendary father, Michael Schumacher, at the Italian Grand Prix.

Schumacher is currently competing in IndyCar with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL), having made the move to the American championship after leaving Alpine’s World Endurance Championship programme.

The latest development comes as Schumacher’s future beyond the 2026 season begins to become clearer. Reports indicate that he is expected to remain in IndyCar, with a move to Meyer Shank Racing emerging as the likely destination for 2027.

The timing is particularly significant because this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza is being dedicated in part to his father’s extraordinary Ferrari legacy.

Ferrari is marking 30 years since Michael Schumacher joined the Scuderia in 1996 with a special livery inspired by the Ferrari F310 he drove during his first season with the team. The SF-26 cars of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton feature design elements inspired by Schumacher’s era, including his famous “MS” branding and seven stars representing his seven world championships.

Michael Schumacher won the Italian Grand Prix five times with Ferrari, including his breakthrough victory for the team at Monza in 1996. His decade with the Scuderia produced five of his seven world championships and helped establish one of the most successful driver-team partnerships in F1 history.

The celebrations at Monza will also feature some of Schumacher’s most famous Ferrari machinery. His 1996 F310, 2002 championship-winning F2002 and 2006 Ferrari 248 F1 are being showcased during the weekend, while former Ferrari drivers Rubens Barrichello and Sebastian Vettel are involved in the tribute programme.

For Mick, however, the focus is on building his own legacy away from Formula 1.

The 27-year-old spent two seasons racing for Haas in F1 before moving into endurance racing with Alpine. He subsequently switched to IndyCar for 2026, where he is gaining experience in a completely different style of racing.

His decision to remain in IndyCar represents another important step in a career that has inevitably been compared with that of his seven-time world champion father.

While Mick has not yet returned to the F1 grid, his name remains closely linked to the sport. His new IndyCar chapter now offers him an opportunity to establish himself on his own terms, while his father’s extraordinary legacy continues to be celebrated at one of Formula 1’s most historic venues.

And as Ferrari celebrates Michael Schumacher at Monza, Mick will be looking ahead to a new team, a new challenge and another opportunity to write his own chapter in the Schumacher racing story.
