Lewis Hamilton Promoted in Dramatic Hungarian GP Twist After FIA Confirms Disqualification

Lewis Hamilton has been handed a late boost in a dramatic Hungarian Grand Prix aftermath, with an FIA disqualification potentially reshuffling the final order at the Hungaroring.

However, the confirmed 2026 Hungarian GP result does not currently show Hamilton being promoted because of another driver’s disqualification. Hamilton finished fifth after a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane, having originally crossed the line fourth behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. �

The result was another frustrating blow for Hamilton, who had been in contention for a podium before Ferrari’s decision to pit him during a Virtual Safety Car period. The move dropped him down the order, while Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli stayed out and benefited. Hamilton subsequently received the five-second penalty, allowing Leclerc to finish ahead of him. �

The bigger twist came after a weekend in which Hamilton had already been hit by FIA sanctions. He qualified second but was handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri, forcing him to start the race from fifth. �

That penalty proved costly because the Hungarian circuit is notoriously difficult for overtaking. Hamilton nevertheless recovered strongly during the race and briefly appeared capable of fighting for a podium before Ferrari’s strategy call changed the complexion of his afternoon.

Lando Norris ultimately claimed victory for McLaren, finishing more than 15 seconds ahead of Verstappen, while Antonelli completed the podium and strengthened his championship lead. �

For Hamilton, the Hungarian GP therefore ended as another case of what might have been. He had the pace to fight near the front but lost ground through penalties and strategy decisions.

And with the FIA continuing to scrutinize incidents and results after races, any genuine late disqualification could still trigger a reshuffle. But at present, claims that Hamilton has already been promoted because of a confirmed Hungarian GP disqualification are not supported by the latest reliable race classification.

The seven-time world champion now heads into the summer break with plenty to think about — particularly Ferrari’s strategy decisions and the repeated penalties that have cost him valuable points. �
