Lewis Hamilton’s difficult start to life at Ferrari has taken another frustrating turn, with the seven-time world champion facing fresh questions after a troubled Italian Grand Prix weekend at Monza.
Hamilton finished sixth at Ferrari’s home race, while his teammate Charles Leclerc’s race ended early after a crash. Ferrari’s weekend was already disappointing, but Hamilton’s own decisions and the team’s strategy have now come under renewed scrutiny.
The latest criticism centres on a problem that has increasingly followed Hamilton during his Ferrari spell: getting the balance between his own driving preferences, Ferrari’s car characteristics and the team’s race strategy right.
At Monza, Hamilton was particularly frustrated by the way Ferrari handled his tyres. He questioned why the team allowed him to remain on worn tyres for so long, while the opening-lap incident involving Leclerc added further tension to an already difficult weekend.
Hamilton’s Ferrari move was supposed to represent the next major chapter of his career. Instead, the British driver has repeatedly found himself battling a car and team that have not always delivered the consistency he expected.
That has made every mistake more costly.
Hamilton’s Ferrari problem
Ferrari have shown genuine pace during 2026, but converting that potential into consistently strong results has proved difficult.
Hamilton currently sits third in the championship with 191 points, behind Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. Leclerc is fifth on 155 points.
The numbers show that Hamilton remains competitive, but they also highlight the gap between Ferrari and the championship-leading Mercedes team.
The criticism is therefore not simply about one bad race.
It is about whether Hamilton and Ferrari have properly solved the problems that have continued to appear throughout the season.
One particularly damaging aspect has been communication. Hamilton has publicly expressed frustration with Ferrari’s decision-making, and after Monza he called for the team to change things.
That has fuelled questions about whether Ferrari’s internal processes are working as they should.
‘Why didn’t he get it sorted?’
The criticism surrounding Hamilton is particularly interesting because he is no newcomer to Formula 1.
After years at Mercedes, Hamilton arrived at Ferrari with enormous experience in managing difficult championship situations. That means expectations are naturally higher.
When something goes wrong, critics are increasingly asking why Hamilton did not identify the problem earlier or push harder for a solution.
However, it would be unfair to place the entire responsibility on the driver.
Formula 1 is a team sport, and tyre preparation, strategy, car setup and race execution all involve dozens of engineers and specialists.
Hamilton can communicate what he feels behind the wheel, but Ferrari ultimately has to turn that feedback into effective decisions.
Ferrari now under pressure
The Italian Grand Prix was especially painful because it was Ferrari’s home race.
Hamilton had hoped to give the passionate Monza crowd something to celebrate, but instead Ferrari left the weekend with more questions than answers.
The team is now facing pressure to understand exactly why its performance has not matched expectations.
Hamilton himself has already made it clear that changes are needed.
And with the championship moving on to Madrid for the Spanish Grand Prix, there is little time for Ferrari to dwell on Monza.
The next race could therefore be extremely important.
Hamilton still has the speed and experience to challenge for major results, but Ferrari needs to provide him with a package capable of doing so consistently.
For now, the biggest question is not whether Hamilton can still perform at the highest level.
It is whether Ferrari can finally give him the consistency he needs.
