Charles Leclerc has provided a reassuring update on his condition after his heavy crash at the Italian Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver initially admitted that he needed further medical checks before being certain he could compete in the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.

Leclerc’s home race for Ferrari at Monza ended in dramatic fashion on Sunday when he lost control of his Ferrari SF-26 at the Parabolica during the second lap. The impact with the barriers was substantial enough to bring out the red flag and temporarily halt the race while the damaged barrier was repaired.

Despite the severity of the crash, Leclerc was able to climb out of the car himself and was taken to the circuit’s medical centre for precautionary examinations. Doctors found no injury during the initial assessment, allowing the Monegasque driver to leave the medical centre.

However, Leclerc revealed that the crash had briefly affected his vision, particularly in his right eye.

“The neck was OK, it was just the vision a little bit at first,” Leclerc explained after the accident. He added that his right eye was not giving him clear vision immediately after the crash, although the problem had subsequently disappeared.

That temporary vision issue was understandably one of Leclerc’s main concerns after such a significant impact. He also acknowledged experiencing some pain following the accident, although he described this as something that could be expected after a heavy crash.

LECLERC EXPECTED TO RACE IN MADRID

Immediately after the Monza incident, Leclerc was not prepared to give an absolute guarantee that he would be fit for the next round of the championship.

He said he expected to undergo “a few additional checks” on Sunday evening and Monday before determining whether he was completely fit for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Leclerc stressed that he believed he should be fine, but preferred to take a cautious approach rather than rush back into the car without completing the necessary medical assessments.

That caution appears to have paid off.

A subsequent update reported that further checks found no injury and that Leclerc had been cleared to race in Madrid. The Ferrari driver was also reported to have travelled home to Monaco without further discomfort following the Monza crash.

The news will come as a major relief to Ferrari, particularly because Leclerc’s crash happened at a crucial stage of the season and came during a disappointing home weekend for the team.

WHAT CAUSED THE MONZA CRASH?

While Leclerc’s physical condition was the immediate priority, attention has also turned to what caused the Ferrari to suddenly lose control.

Leclerc suggested that something felt unusual with the power delivery of the car during the opening laps. He explained that he had experienced something similar on the first lap before encountering the problem again on the second lap when the crash occurred.

However, the Ferrari driver was careful not to blame a technical failure without first examining the available data.

Leclerc said Ferrari would need to investigate the information from the car before reaching a firm conclusion about what happened.

The crash occurred while Leclerc was under pressure from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. After losing control at the fast Parabolica, the Ferrari went off the circuit and hit the barriers, forcing race officials to stop the event temporarily.

ANOTHER BLOW FOR FERRARI

Leclerc’s retirement was particularly painful because Ferrari had entered its home Grand Prix with genuine hopes of challenging near the front.

The Monegasque had qualified third, putting himself in a strong position for the race. But his afternoon ended almost immediately, leaving Lewis Hamilton as Ferrari’s only remaining representative.

Hamilton eventually finished sixth after a difficult race that included an early incident involving his teammate. Meanwhile, Mercedes produced a spectacular result, with Kimi Antonelli winning his home Italian Grand Prix after starting from 19th and George Russell finishing second.

For Leclerc, however, the focus quickly shifted away from the disappointment of losing a potential podium opportunity and toward making sure he was physically ready for the next race.

FERRARI WILL ALSO BE WATCHING THE DAMAGED CAR

Leclerc’s health is not the only concern Ferrari must address before Madrid.

The crash caused significant damage to the SF-26, meaning the team has also been assessing the condition of the car and its components.

According to the latest report, the chassis and gearbox were understood to have survived the impact, while Ferrari was still examining the power unit. The possibility of reusing the engine could be particularly important because replacing it may have consequences for Ferrari’s allocation later in the season.

For now, though, the biggest positive is that Leclerc himself appears to have escaped serious injury.

His initial concerns about his vision had already resolved, and subsequent medical checks reportedly found no injury. That clears the way for him to prepare for Madrid and attempt to bounce back from one of the most frustrating moments of his 2026 campaign.

The Spanish Grand Prix will therefore represent an opportunity for Leclerc to put the Monza disappointment behind him. After qualifying near the front in Italy only to retire on the second lap, Ferrari will be hoping its star driver can return to the cockpit fully fit and turn his attention back toward scoring points.

For Leclerc, the message following the crash is ultimately a positive one: the accident was serious, but the medical checks have not revealed an injury, and he has been cleared to race in Madrid.
