Lewis Hamilton Delivers Powerful Peace Message as Charles Leclerc Gives Brutal Ferrari Verdict

Lewis Hamilton has used the build-up to the United States Grand Prix to call for peace across conflict-hit regions, while the prospect of Formula 1 returning to Africa with a Rwandan Grand Prix from 2030 brings renewed attention to the sport’s global ambitions.

Hamilton calls for peace amid Rwanda Grand Prix debate

The seven-time world champion made his comments during a press conference ahead of the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, where he was asked about Formula 1’s planned return to Africa.

Hamilton has long campaigned for an African Grand Prix, viewing it as an important opportunity to showcase the continent’s culture, talent and potential. The sport’s agreement with Rwanda represents a significant step towards that ambition, with a new race expected in the early 2030s.

However, the decision has also attracted criticism from human rights campaigners, who have raised concerns about Rwanda’s human rights record and the ongoing conflict in neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Hamilton acknowledged the concerns and urged people to approach the issue with humility, stressing that hosting a race should not mean ignoring the challenges facing the region.

He also highlighted the importance of understanding Africa’s history, including the lasting effects of colonialism and foreign intervention.

Concluding his remarks, the Ferrari driver delivered his powerful message: “I think we need to make sure we’re pushing to free Congo, free Sudan, free Syria, free Palestine.”

Hamilton added that he hoped greater awareness would encourage meaningful conversations and contribute towards peace around the world.

Hamilton’s African Grand Prix dream could extend his F1 career

The planned race in Rwanda could also have significant implications for Hamilton’s future in Formula 1.

The British driver has admitted that the prospect of finally competing in Africa could motivate him to remain in the sport into the early 2030s, provided he can maintain his fitness and continue delivering competitive results.

Hamilton, who is contracted to Ferrari through at least the end of 2027, has spent years pushing for Formula 1 to return to Africa. The continent last hosted a world championship race at South Africa’s Kyalami circuit in 1993.

The proposed Rwandan Grand Prix would therefore represent more than another addition to the calendar for Hamilton. It would fulfil a long-standing ambition that has become increasingly important to him as his career progresses.

Charles Leclerc delivers blunt Ferrari verdict

Meanwhile, Hamilton’s team-mate Charles Leclerc has offered a frank assessment of Ferrari’s current competitiveness as the team continues its 2026 campaign.

Despite showing impressive speed during Friday’s practice sessions in Austin, Leclerc acknowledged that Ferrari still has ground to make up against its rivals.

The Monegasque topped both opening practice sessions, demonstrating the potential of the Ferrari package at the Circuit of the Americas. However, he admitted that the team is missing something compared with its competitors.

Leclerc’s assessment underlines a familiar challenge for Ferrari: translating promising single-lap pace into consistent performance when it matters most.

With the championship battle intensifying, Ferrari will need to turn that potential into results if it hopes to close the gap to Mercedes and its other leading rivals.

Ferrari under pressure ahead of the United States Grand Prix

Hamilton and Leclerc arrive in Austin with different priorities but a shared objective of helping Ferrari remain competitive.

Hamilton’s comments have placed him at the centre of an important conversation extending beyond motorsport, while Leclerc’s assessment highlights the technical challenges confronting the Scuderia.

The United States Grand Prix weekend now presents Ferrari with an opportunity to demonstrate whether its practice pace can translate into a stronger competitive showing.

For Hamilton, the planned African Grand Prix represents a potential career milestone. For Leclerc, the immediate task is to help Ferrari address the shortcomings he has identified.
