Just In: star Lewis Hamilton issues heartfelt Macklemore statement after Ed Sheeran tour axe

Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton has entered the growing controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s tour, publicly expressing support for the American artist following a dispute over comments about the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, responded directly to a lengthy statement Macklemore published on social media explaining his version of events. The Ferrari driver wrote: “Thank you for using your voice, standing with you.” His message quickly attracted attention because of Hamilton’s global profile and his history of speaking publicly on social and humanitarian issues. 

The controversy began after Macklemore made pro-Palestinian remarks during performances at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on September 4 and 5. During his appearance, the rapper spoke about Palestinians and called for a “Free Palestine”, comments that subsequently became a major source of debate surrounding his involvement in Sheeran’s North American tour.

Macklemore was subsequently removed from the remaining US dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour. According to statements from Sheeran and the tour promoter, the decision followed concerns from venues about allowing Macklemore to remain on the bill.

Sheeran later addressed the controversy himself, saying that removing Macklemore was not his personal decision. The British singer said venues scheduled to host upcoming shows had indicated they would withdraw the concerts if Macklemore remained part of the touring lineup.

Sheeran also said he had spoken with venue representatives, including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, in an attempt to find a resolution. Ultimately, he said the promoters and venues made the final decision.

Macklemore’s own account of the situation was more detailed. In his statement, he described conversations with Sheeran and claimed that pressure from venue owners had played a significant role in his removal. He also acknowledged that Sheeran was placed in a difficult position, while arguing that his friendship with the singer did not prevent him from speaking about issues he considered important.

The rapper further said he did not want the discussion to centre on himself. Instead, he argued that attention should remain on the suffering of Palestinians and the wider humanitarian situation in Gaza. Those statements have generated significant support as well as criticism, making the dispute much larger than a disagreement over a concert lineup.

Hamilton’s intervention has now added a major sporting name to the list of public figures commenting on the controversy. His brief message did not address the detailed allegations surrounding the tour’s cancellation, nor did he comment publicly on the separate statements made by Sheeran, Macklemore or venue representatives. Instead, his message focused on supporting Macklemore’s decision to speak publicly.

Hamilton is not the only prominent figure to have responded. Several of Sheeran’s other support acts have also announced that they will no longer participate in the remaining tour dates. Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and the Irish band Beoga have all withdrawn, with their statements citing their own positions on the dispute and the broader issue of allowing artists to speak about political and humanitarian subjects.

The developments have consequently transformed what began as a dispute surrounding one opening act into a much wider debate involving artists, venues, promoters and public figures.

For Hamilton, however, the intervention is notable because it comes at a particularly busy point in his Formula 1 season. The Ferrari driver remains focused on his racing commitments, but his latest social-media message demonstrates that his public interests extend beyond motorsport.

The controversy surrounding Macklemore is continuing to develop, with different parties offering contrasting accounts of why the rapper was removed from the tour. While Sheeran has maintained that the final decision came from promoters and venues, Macklemore has publicly described the circumstances from his perspective.

Hamilton’s short but pointed message has therefore become another significant moment in an increasingly high-profile dispute — one that has brought together the worlds of Formula 1, music, entertainment and international political debate.
