Lewis Hamilton Hit With Another Penalty at Hungarian Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton’s difficult run with the Formula 1 stewards continued on Sunday after the Ferrari driver was handed a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane during the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The seven-time world champion had produced another determined drive at the Hungaroring and was battling for a podium finish when race officials placed him under investigation. Moments later, the FIA confirmed Hamilton had exceeded the pit lane speed limit during one of his pit stops, resulting in a five-second time penalty. According to reports, the infringement was incredibly small, with Hamilton exceeding the limit by just 0.1 km/h.
The penalty proved extremely costly.
Hamilton crossed the finish line in fourth position after an impressive recovery drive, but the additional five seconds dropped him behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in the final classification. It also ended any realistic chance of securing a podium finish despite his strong pace in the closing stages of the race.
The latest sanction adds to what has become a frustrating spell for Hamilton. Earlier in the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, he had already received a three-place grid penalty after being judged to have impeded Oscar Piastri during qualifying. That punishment forced him to start further down the order despite showing competitive pace throughout the weekend.
Hamilton’s race itself was full of promise. Ferrari’s strategy and his consistent pace allowed him to climb through the field and put himself in contention for a top-three finish. During the closing laps, he chased Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli while also trying to build enough of a gap over Leclerc to protect fourth place.
However, the pit lane speeding infringement ultimately erased all of that hard work.
Under Formula 1 regulations, drivers must remain below the pit lane speed limit from pit entry to pit exit. Even the smallest breach can trigger an automatic investigation and lead to a time penalty, as safety within the pit lane is treated as one of the sport’s strictest regulations. In Hamilton’s case, the margin was almost negligible, yet it was still enough for the FIA stewards to apply the standard five-second penalty.
The decision sparked discussion among fans, with many pointing out how harsh it seemed for such a tiny excess in speed. Nevertheless, FIA regulations leave little room for discretion once the telemetry confirms a driver has exceeded the prescribed limit.
The penalty also continues Hamilton’s recent sequence of disciplinary setbacks. The Ferrari driver has now collected several steward penalties over the past few race weekends, frustrating his efforts to build momentum during the championship campaign.
While Hamilton’s afternoon ended in disappointment, the race itself was won by Lando Norris, who secured his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Max Verstappen finished second after a late overtake, while Kimi Antonelli completed the podium for Mercedes. Hamilton eventually dropped to fifth in the official results after his penalty was applied.
Despite another frustrating result, Hamilton’s performance showed encouraging signs for Ferrari. His race pace remained competitive, and without the pit lane infringement, he looked capable of challenging for another podium finish.
For Hamilton and Ferrari, the focus will now shift to ensuring operational mistakes do not continue to undermine strong performances. With the championship entering a crucial phase, every point matters, and losing valuable positions over a pit lane speeding violation especially one measured at just 0.1 km/he will undoubtedly be a painful lesson for both driver and team.
