F1 boss denies move for F2 phenom – but admits ‘things can change’

Cadillac has played down speculation that it could make a major change to its Formula 1 driver line-up for the 2027 season, despite growing attention surrounding highly rated young driver Rafael Camara.

Cadillac CEO Dan Towriss addressed the rumours after the team announced a change in its management structure, with Marcin Budkowski appointed to replace Graeme Lowdon as team principal. Questions about the team’s future drivers naturally followed, particularly because Cadillac currently fields two experienced competitors in Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas.

Both drivers are 36, making Cadillac one of the more experienced pairings on the F1 grid. The team has also been developing younger talent, with Colton Herta serving as its test and reserve driver while gaining experience in Formula 2. However, Herta’s difficult campaign has reportedly encouraged speculation that Cadillac could look elsewhere for a potential future star.

One name that has emerged strongly is Ferrari junior Rafael Camara. The Brazilian driver won the Formula 3 championship and has continued to attract attention during his F2 campaign. His progress has made him an obvious candidate for teams searching for a young driver capable of eventually making the step into Formula 1.

Reports had suggested that Camara could be considered for a Cadillac seat, potentially replacing one of its veteran drivers. Perez’s situation has attracted particular interest because he has been linked with a possible move to Williams, although the Mexican has reportedly been performing better than Bottas within Cadillac’s current line-up.

Towriss, however, insisted that Cadillac is not currently preparing to change its drivers for 2027. He stressed that the team remains satisfied with both Perez and Bottas and believes their experience is valuable as the new operation continues establishing itself in Formula 1.

The Cadillac boss also played down reports connecting the team with young drivers, saying the speculation was not substantiated and should not be treated as evidence of an imminent signing.

Nevertheless, Towriss stopped short of completely closing the door on a future change. He acknowledged that Formula 1 is an unpredictable environment and that circumstances can develop quickly.

That qualification is likely to keep the driver market interesting. Although Cadillac currently appears committed to its experienced pairing, the team’s long-term strategy could eventually require a younger driver to provide a fresh generation of talent.

Camara’s performances will therefore remain worth watching. A strong finish to his F2 season could increase his appeal, particularly as Cadillac looks to build a competitive foundation for the years ahead.

For now, though, the message from Cadillac is clear: there are no planned driver changes for 2027. At the same time, Towriss’s admission that circumstances can change means the possibility of a surprise move has not been completely eliminated.

With the F1 driver market already beginning to take shape, Camara’s name could remain part of the conversation if Cadillac decides that the time is right to introduce a new generation of talent.
