Lewis Hamilton handed F1 title boost as Ferrari upgrade set to deliver significant power gain

Lewis Hamilton’s hopes of mounting a serious challenge for the 2026 Formula 1 world championship have received another lift, with Ferrari reportedly preparing a second power-unit development that could provide a noticeable improvement in straight-line performance.

Ferrari have spent much of the season working to close the gap to Mercedes, particularly in terms of power. The Italian team has already introduced aerodynamic improvements and an engine update, helping Hamilton remain within striking distance of the championship battle.

The first power-unit development, introduced at the Austrian Grand Prix, was understood to have delivered a relatively modest increase in output. However, reports now suggest Ferrari’s second permitted development could provide a substantially larger gain.

According to reports from Italian media cited by GPFans, the next package could produce around 15 horsepower, potentially offering an improvement of approximately two-tenths of a second per lap at a circuit such as Monza.

That potential gain could be particularly valuable for Ferrari because straight-line speed has been one of the areas where the team has struggled against Mercedes. Hamilton previously acknowledged that Ferrari had been losing several tenths on the straights during the opening part of the campaign.

The seven-time world champion nevertheless praised the work being carried out at Maranello and suggested that Ferrari’s development programme could become increasingly effective during the second half of the season.

Ferrari’s progress has already been evident. Hamilton claimed his first victory for the Scuderia in Barcelona after the team introduced a major package of upgrades. The performance was significant enough for McLaren team principal Andrea Stella to suggest that Ferrari had developed one of the strongest, if not the strongest, chassis in Formula 1.

The remaining concern has been extracting enough performance from the power unit to complement that chassis. Mercedes has maintained an advantage in engine performance, making Ferrari’s planned development particularly important.

Ferrari’s initial 2026 engine upgrade was officially confirmed ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix as part of the additional development allowance available under the new regulations. The team described its development work as an ongoing effort to exploit opportunities within the rules.

The second development is expected after the summer break, with a new turbocharger among the changes reportedly being prepared. Motorsport.com previously reported that Ferrari had already planned the second power-unit development as part of its efforts to reduce the deficit to its rivals.

For Hamilton, the timing could be crucial. He entered the season determined to recover from a difficult first campaign with Ferrari and has already shown improved form during 2026.

While an additional 15 horsepower would not automatically transform Ferrari into the fastest team, it could give Hamilton and Charles Leclerc a stronger package on circuits where engine performance plays a major role.

There are also limitations to consider. Extra power only becomes valuable if the car can convert it efficiently into lap time without creating additional tyre or balance problems.

Nevertheless, Ferrari’s continued development provides Hamilton with renewed optimism. If the reported upgrade delivers as expected, the Scuderia could return from the summer break with a more competitive car—and Hamilton could have another opportunity to close the championship gap.

With the title fight still open, Ferrari’s development programme may prove decisive in determining whether Hamilton can turn his strong second-half expectations into a genuine championship challenge.
