Kimi Antonelli has been hit with a major setback ahead of his home Italian Grand Prix, with the Mercedes championship leader set to start Sunday’s race from the back of the grid after the team elected to install a new power unit.

The penalty is a significant blow for the 20-year-old Italian, who arrives at Monza leading the Formula 1 drivers’ championship. Mercedes has exceeded the permitted power-unit allocation with Antonelli’s car, meaning the young star will pay the price with a back-of-the-grid start at the “Temple of Speed.”

Mercedes could also turn the difficult situation into a team opportunity. Because Antonelli will start at the back regardless of his qualifying position, he has agreed to potentially help Russell by providing a slipstream during qualifying if the team requests it. Russell is currently 59 points behind his teammate and will be hoping to maximize the opportunity.

The pressure will now be on Antonelli to produce one of the standout recovery drives of his young career.
