BREAKING: FIA Confirms Major Technical Decision for Italian Grand Prix as Monza Prepares for New 2026 Challenge

 

The FIA has confirmed an important technical decision ahead of this weekend’s highly anticipated Italian Grand Prix, with four Straight Mode zones set to be used around the legendary Monza circuit under Formula 1’s revolutionary new 2026 regulations.

 

Monza, famously known around the world as the “Temple of Speed,” has always presented one of the biggest challenges on the Formula 1 calendar. Its combination of extremely long straights, heavy braking zones and high-speed corners makes it a unique test for drivers and teams. However, the introduction of Formula 1’s new active aerodynamics system has added another fascinating dimension to the challenge facing the grid in 2026.

 

Under the sport’s new regulations, active aerodynamics has partially replaced the traditional Drag Reduction System, commonly known as DRS. The first zone will be located on the famous main straight, where drivers reach incredible speeds before arriving at the heavy braking zone for the first chicane. The second will cover the section between Curva Grande and the second chicane, another crucial area where straight-line performance could prove decisive.

 

A third Straight Mode zone will be positioned on the fast section between Lesmo 2 and Ascari. This part of the circuit has traditionally rewarded cars with excellent top speed and low aerodynamic drag, meaning teams will need to carefully optimise their setups to take maximum advantage of the new technology.

 

The fourth and final zone will be located on the run towards Parabolica, now officially known as the Alboreto corner. This final high-speed section could become particularly important during battles for position, as drivers attempt to gain momentum before returning to the start-finish straight.

 

Meanwhile, the FIA has also confirmed the location of the new-for-2026 Overtake Mode detection point. The detection point will be positioned before Parabolica, with activation becoming available on the exit of the corner.

Drivers will need to carefully judge when to use their available electrical energy and aerodynamic advantages. A successful deployment could help a driver close the gap to a rival and potentially launch an overtaking attempt down one of Monza’s famous straights.

Drivers could find themselves facing difficult decisions over when to deploy energy for maximum performance and when to conserve it for later stages of the race.

 

This could become particularly important during wheel-to-wheel battles.

 

A driver may have the aerodynamic advantage needed to attack an opponent, but without enough available electrical energy, completing the move could become significantly more difficult. Equally, deploying too much energy too early could leave a driver vulnerable later in the lap.
