F1 Set for Major Calendar Twist as Lost Grand Prix Could Be Restored

Formula 1 could be heading for another major calendar change, with the sport still exploring the possibility of restoring one of the Grands Prix lost from the 2026 schedule.

The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were originally scheduled for April but were cancelled amid the wider security situation in the Middle East. Their removal created a significant gap in the championship calendar and reduced the number of planned races.

However, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has kept the door open to bringing at least one of those events back before the 2026 season concludes. Recent reports indicate that Bahrain is the leading candidate for a potential return, although no final decision has been announced.

The possibility of restoring a lost race would represent a significant change to the championship schedule. F1 would need to find a suitable date while taking into account the existing calendar, team logistics, freight movements and the increasingly congested second half of the season.
The situation is particularly complicated because the championship is already facing uncertainty surrounding the final Middle Eastern rounds. F1 has confirmed that if Qatar or Abu Dhabi cannot host their respective races, the season could potentially finish with races in Europe instead.

Several circuits have been discussed as potential emergency venues in different scenarios, including Imola and Portimão. Imola has reportedly emerged as one of the leading alternatives for a European season finale, while Portimão has already secured its place on the 2027 and 2028 calendars.

For the teams and drivers, an additional race could have a major impact on the championship battle. More points would be available, giving title contenders another opportunity to gain ground while adding further pressure to an already demanding season.
Nevertheless, the return of a lost Grand Prix remains a possibility rather than a confirmed decision. F1 and the relevant authorities will have to determine whether the logistical and safety conditions allow another event to be staged.

With the championship entering a crucial stage, any official announcement could have major consequences for the title fight and the remainder of the 2026 season.
