George Russell opens up on sports psychologist and ‘great’ support network

George Russell has spoken openly about the importance of having a strong support system around him as he continues to handle the pressures and expectations that come with competing at the highest level of Formula 1.

The Mercedes driver has previously discussed the mental demands of elite motorsport, where drivers are required to remain focused while dealing with intense competition, constant media attention and the pressure to deliver results every race weekend. Russell has now highlighted the role that professional support and the people closest to him play in helping him maintain the right mindset.

Russell explained that working with a sports psychologist has become an important part of his approach. Rather than seeing mental preparation as something separate from performance, the British driver views it as another area that can help him become more consistent and better equipped to deal with difficult moments.

Formula 1 can be an unforgiving environment. A driver may spend weeks preparing for a race only for circumstances outside their control to affect the result. Mistakes are also immediately scrutinised, while successful performances can create even greater expectations for the next event.

For Russell, having people around him who understand those challenges has been particularly valuable. He described his support network as “great”, emphasising the importance of being surrounded by individuals he can trust and speak to away from the demands of racing.

The Mercedes star has established himself as one of the leading drivers of his generation, but his journey has also included difficult periods. Managing those highs and lows has required him to develop greater awareness of his emotions and the way he responds to pressure.

Sports psychology can play a useful role in that process. It can help athletes develop strategies for concentration, confidence, handling setbacks and maintaining perspective. For a Formula 1 driver, those qualities can be especially important because decisions often have to be made within fractions of a second.

Russell’s comments also underline how modern Formula 1 drivers increasingly recognise that preparation is about more than physical fitness and technical knowledge. Mental resilience has become an essential part of competing successfully over a long and demanding season.

The British driver has often presented himself as someone willing to learn from difficult experiences. Instead of allowing disappointing results to dominate his thinking, he has spoken about the importance of understanding what went wrong and moving forward.

That approach could prove increasingly important as Russell continues to face expectations at Mercedes. Every season brings new pressure, particularly when a driver is competing for victories and hoping to establish himself as a genuine championship contender.

Behind the scenes, however, Russell’s comments suggest that he does not believe he has to manage those challenges alone. His sports psychologist, family, friends and wider professional team all form part of the support structure that allows him to concentrate on his career.

The willingness to discuss mental preparation also reflects a broader change in elite sport. Athletes are increasingly comfortable acknowledging that psychological wellbeing and performance are closely connected.

For Russell, maintaining that balance could be just as important as finding extra performance from the car. With Formula 1’s competitive environment becoming increasingly demanding, having a reliable support network may give him another tool as he continues his pursuit of success with Mercedes.
