Former F1 Boss Predicts When Williams Chief Could Face the Sack

Williams team principal James Vowles is facing increasing pressure following a difficult 2026 Formula 1 campaign, with former F1 team boss Guenther Steiner suggesting that his position could come under serious threat within the next year.

Williams entered the new season with expectations of continuing its rebuilding project, but results have reportedly fallen short of what the team had hoped to achieve. The lack of progress has raised questions about whether the current leadership structure can deliver the improvement required.

Steiner, who previously led Haas, has now offered a blunt assessment of Vowles’ situation. According to the former team principal, Williams may eventually be forced to consider a change at the top if the team’s performances do not improve.

The comments come at a difficult moment for Vowles, who has been responsible for overseeing Williams’ long-term transformation since taking charge. His arrival was seen as an important step in the team’s attempt to return to the front of the F1 grid.

However, Formula 1 is an intensely results-driven environment, and continued struggles can quickly increase pressure on team principals. Steiner’s prediction suggests that Vowles may have a limited period in which to demonstrate that his plans are working.

The former Haas boss indicated that the situation could become particularly serious over the course of the next year. That does not mean Williams has confirmed any plans to remove Vowles, but it highlights the level of scrutiny surrounding the team’s current direction.

Vowles has previously spoken about building Williams into a competitive operation rather than seeking an immediate short-term solution. That approach requires patience, investment and strong technical development, particularly under the sport’s changing regulations.

For now, Vowles remains in charge, and Williams will be hoping that improvements on track can ease the growing pressure. The coming months could therefore prove important in determining whether the team’s long-term project begins to produce stronger results.

Steiner’s comments have nevertheless added another layer to the situation, with the former F1 boss effectively putting a timeline on when Vowles’ position could become vulnerable if Williams fails to make the expected progress.
