Lewis Hamilton has been officially promoted in the final classification of the Hungarian Grand Prix after the FIA confirmed the disqualification of a rival driver following post-race technical inspections at the Hungaroring.
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion initially crossed the finish line just outside the position he now occupies, but the FIA’s decision to remove another competitor from the results has reshuffled the final standings, handing Hamilton valuable championship points in what has become another dramatic weekend in the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The governing body announced the disqualification after routine post-race scrutineering uncovered a breach of the Formula 1 Technical Regulations. As is standard procedure, FIA officials carried out detailed inspections on selected cars after the race, and one machine was found not to comply with the regulations. Although the infringement was not related to dangerous driving or sporting conduct, it was deemed significant enough to warrant exclusion from the race results.
Hamilton, who endured a challenging weekend after serving a grid penalty before the race, produced an impressive recovery drive through the field. The Ferrari driver displayed strong race pace, executed a well-timed strategy, and managed his tyres effectively to finish within touching distance of the leading group.
The revised classification means Hamilton gains an additional position and extra championship points, providing Ferrari with an important boost as the title battle continues to intensify.
Speaking after the race, Hamilton had expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance despite missing out on a higher finish on track. The FIA’s ruling has now rewarded that effort, even though the promotion came hours after the chequered flag.
