Kimi Antonelli is enjoying a remarkable rise in Formula 1, but a recent loss within Italian motorsport has given his family an important reminder that success and achievement should never come ahead of health and well-being.

Speaking about his son as Kimi celebrates his 20th birthday, his father, Marco Antonelli, reflected on the young Mercedes driver’s extraordinary progress and the priorities he believes should remain at the centre of his life. According to Marco, the most important wish for his son is not championship success, money or fame, but simply good health.

The comments came after the death of Italian driver Cedric Sbirrazzuoli, who passed away on August 20 at the age of 39 after battling cancer. Sbirrazzuoli had previously competed with Marco Antonelli’s team, making his death particularly poignant for the Antonelli family and serving as a reminder of how quickly circumstances can change.

Marco explained that experiences such as this can force people to reconsider what truly matters. While motorsport provides opportunities for success, recognition and financial rewards, he believes those achievements mean little if a person’s health is not protected.

His message comes at a remarkable moment in Kimi’s career. The Mercedes driver has established himself as one of the leading competitors on the 2026 Formula 1 grid and, according to the report, currently leads the championship by 59 points after recording six victories during his second season. His performances have also placed him in line for a significant improvement in his financial position as his career continues to develop.

Despite the attention surrounding his son’s success, Marco stressed that reaching Formula 1 was never treated as an obsession within the family. Motorsport had always been part of their everyday lives, and Kimi’s development happened naturally through his family’s involvement in racing.

Interestingly, Formula 1 was not even Kimi’s childhood ambition. His father recalled that the young driver once dreamed of competing in the DTM rather than Formula 1. His eventual move into the world’s premier single-seater championship came through a combination of demonstrated talent, opportunity and what Marco described as good fortune in Mercedes choosing to support him.

Marco also remembered Kimi’s earliest encounter with competitive driving. When Kimi was only one year old, his family took him to the Sarno circuit. During the visit, he was placed in a kart with his father, and rather than being frightened by the experience, the young Kimi became so attached to the steering wheel that he cried when his mother eventually took him away.

Years later, that early fascination has developed into an extraordinary Formula 1 career. Yet Marco’s message remains clear: regardless of how successful Kimi becomes, health and personal character must come first.

For the Antonelli family, the loss of Sbirrazzuoli has therefore provided a powerful reminder that sporting achievements should be appreciated without losing sight of life’s most important priorities.
