Just In: Title race latest as experts predict Lewis Hamilton win probability

The Formula 1 championship battle is entering another fascinating stage, and Lewis Hamilton’s hopes of securing an eighth world title have become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver currently sits second in the championship standings, but he faces a significant challenge from Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli, who has established himself as the man to beat during the first part of the 2026 campaign.

Hamilton enters the final stretch of the season with 169 points, 50 behind Antonelli on 219. Mercedes driver George Russell is also firmly involved in the championship battle with 160 points, meaning Hamilton cannot afford to focus exclusively on Antonelli. Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc is further back on 138 points, giving the Italian team two drivers capable of influencing the fight at the front.

Despite the points deficit, Hamilton has reasons to remain optimistic. His first season with Ferrari has produced a noticeable improvement compared with his difficult 2025 campaign, and his victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix provided an important reminder of what he can achieve when the Ferrari package performs at its best. That result also demonstrated that Hamilton still has the speed and experience required to compete for major victories.

However, the championship situation remains challenging. Antonelli has enjoyed an outstanding campaign and built his advantage through a remarkable run of victories earlier in the season. His consistency has placed Mercedes in a commanding position in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships, with the team currently holding 379 points compared with Ferrari’s 307.

The latest expert and betting assessments therefore give Hamilton a difficult path to the championship. While his chances remain alive, the 50-point gap means Ferrari will need a sustained run of strong results. Hamilton cannot simply rely on winning races; he also needs Antonelli and Mercedes to encounter setbacks if he is to dramatically reduce the deficit.

Reliability could become particularly important during the remaining races. Mercedes have experienced reliability difficulties in recent events, while Ferrari are continuing to push aggressively with upgrades for the SF-26. If Ferrari can maintain their recent development momentum, Hamilton could find himself with more opportunities to challenge for victories and podium finishes.

The next major opportunity arrives at Zandvoort, where the Dutch Grand Prix is scheduled for August 21–23. The race marks the return of Formula 1 after the summer break and begins a demanding run towards the final rounds of the championship.

For Hamilton, the objective is straightforward: maximise every opportunity. A strong qualifying result, a clean race and another victory could immediately change the mood surrounding his title challenge. At the same time, any mistake or disappointing Ferrari weekend would make the championship increasingly difficult to recover.

The seven-time world champion therefore remains an outsider rather than the favourite, but the fight is far from finished. Formula 1 has repeatedly shown how quickly championship momentum can change, particularly when reliability problems, upgrades and unexpected race results enter the equation.

With 13 rounds already completed? Actually, the calendar shows 12 completed rounds before the Dutch Grand Prix, so Hamilton still has plenty of races ahead to mount a comeback. The mathematics may currently favour Antonelli, but Ferrari’s development and Hamilton’s experience ensure that the title race remains one of the most compelling stories of the 2026 season.

The coming races will reveal whether Hamilton can transform his remaining title opportunity into a serious championship charge—or whether Antonelli can maintain his advantage and secure his place at the top of Formula 1.
