Italian Grand Prix 2026 – Monza: Heat Hazard Alert 🔥
The FIA has officially declared this weekend’s Italian GP at Monza a ‘Heat Hazard’ race – only the 2nd time this season after Austria
What’s happening with the weather
It’s going to be brutal and dry all weekend at the Temple of Speed:
– Friday Sept 4 – FP1 & FP2: Hot and dry, clear skies. 21C to 34C peak. Track temp up to 56C
– Saturday Sept 5 – FP3 & Qualifying: Same story. 22C to 34C, heat index 34C. Track up to 57C
– Sunday Sept 6 – RACE 3pm local: Sunny and hot. 24C to 34C, heat index 33-34C with 40% humidity. Track could hit 57C again. Rain chance: 0% all weekend, 10% after sunset Sunday
That’s well above Monza’s normal early-Sept 25-27C. Northern Italy is in its 6th heatwave of the summer
What ‘Heat Hazard’ means for F1
The FIA triggers this when the heat index is forecast above 31C. For Monza:
1. Cooling vests mandatory hardware: Teams must fit the liquid-cooled vest system to cars. This bumps minimum car weight by 5kg
2. Driver choice: Drivers can wear the chilled-liquid vest, OR skip it but carry 0.5kg of ballast instead so there’s no weight advantage
3. Extra measures: Grid fans, ice vests, shade structures, and mandatory post-session medical checks
Why? Cockpits can exceed 40C with all the fireproof gear. The protocol was brought in after the 2023 Qatar GP where drivers had heat exhaustion
The storylines
– Home hero: 20-year-old Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli leads the championship heading into his home race
– Tyre management: With track temps hitting 56-57C, tyre degradation will be massive
– This is only the 4th heat hazard race ever – after Singapore 2024, USA 2024, and Austria 2026
Bottom line: Expect a survival race. It’s not about if it’s hot, it’s about who can stay sharp for 53 laps at 34C ambient and 57C track without cooking in the car.
