F1 Sprint Qualifying Results: Lewis Hamilton Disaster as Title Bid Falters at Dutch Grand Prix

21 August 2026 — Zandvoort, Netherlands

Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 title challenge suffered another setback at the Dutch Grand Prix after the Ferrari driver could manage only seventh place in Sprint Qualifying, leaving him with work to do in Saturday’s 100km Sprint.

The result is particularly significant because Hamilton arrived at Zandvoort 50 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli. With the title fight entering its crucial second half, every lost opportunity could make the gap increasingly difficult to overcome.

Russell strikes as Hamilton struggles

George Russell produced a stunning lap to take Sprint pole for Mercedes, edging Lando Norris by just 0.041 seconds. Charles Leclerc put Ferrari third, while Oscar Piastri secured fourth. Antonelli, despite showing impressive pace in practice, could only take fifth after an incident involving his Mercedes.

Max Verstappen will start his home Sprint from sixth, immediately ahead of Hamilton.

Hamilton’s seventh-place result is a disappointment after he finished fourth in the sole practice session, only 0.190 seconds behind Antonelli.

Ferrari now has a fight on its hands

Hamilton’s position means he has limited room for error in the Sprint. The top eight finishers score points, so moving forward will be vital if Ferrari’s title hopes are to remain alive.

For Antonelli, meanwhile, the situation is far more comfortable. Although fifth is not where Mercedes would have wanted him, the championship leader remains ahead of his closest rival and has another opportunity to score points on Saturday.

Russell’s pole also adds another dimension to the championship battle. The Mercedes driver is currently third in the standings and has now placed himself in the perfect position to take points away from both Hamilton and Antonelli.

Hamilton needs a response

There is still plenty of racing left at Zandvoort, and Sprint Qualifying does not decide Sunday’s Grand Prix. Saturday’s Sprint will provide Hamilton with his first opportunity to recover ground before the main qualifying session later that day.

But after arriving in the Netherlands hoping to close the 50-point championship deficit, seventh place is clearly not the start Ferrari would have wanted.

With Russell on pole, Norris and Leclerc directly behind him, and Antonelli and Verstappen ahead of Hamilton, the Dutch GP Sprint is already shaping up to be a major test of Hamilton’s championship ambitions.

The title fight is far from over — but Hamilton now needs a big comeback at Zandvoort.
