George Russell Relives Heartbreaking F1 Disqualification After… see details 

Mercedes driver George Russell has opened up about one of the most painful moments of his Formula 1 career, revisiting the dramatic disqualification that stripped him of victory at the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix.

 

More than two years after the incident, Russell was once again asked to reflect on what happened at Spa-Francorchamps, a race that initially appeared to have delivered one of the finest victories of his career.

 

Russell produced a remarkable performance throughout the race, eventually crossing the finish line in first place ahead of his Mercedes teammate, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. However, his celebrations were short-lived after officials conducted the mandatory post-race checks.

 

The FIA discovered that Russell’s Mercedes W15 was 1.5 kilograms below the minimum permitted weight of 798kg. As a result, the British driver was disqualified, meaning he lost what would have been a memorable victory.

 

Speaking to Mercedes sponsor SAP, Russell explained how the race unfolded and why he decided to take the risk of completing it with only one pit stop.

 

According to Russell, the original strategy was expected to involve two pit stops, which was the approach most drivers were following. However, after his first stop, Russell quickly realized that his tyres were performing better than expected.

 

Around 10 laps into his stint, he began considering whether it was possible to reach the chequered flag without stopping again. He communicated the idea to his team over the radio, telling them that he felt comfortable on the tyres and wanted them to consider switching to a one-stop strategy.

 

Mercedes eventually agreed to the alternative plan, but the decision placed Russell under enormous pressure during the final stages of the race.

 

The team warned him that, under the original two-stop strategy, he was expected to be caught by Hamilton with just two laps remaining. That meant Russell could not afford even the smallest mistake if he wanted to remain ahead.

 

The Mercedes driver responded brilliantly. He maintained his pace, defended his position and successfully kept Hamilton behind him to claim what appeared to be the third victory of his F1 career.

 

After taking the chequered flag, Russell headed to the podium and celebrated with the fans, seemingly believing he had produced a perfect race. But approximately 20 minutes later, the devastating news arrived.

 

Russell was informed that his car had failed the post-race weight check and was 1.5kg under the required minimum.

 

The driver explained that the situation was particularly frustrating because Mercedes carefully calculates how much weight a car is expected to lose during a race.

 

A Formula 1 car becomes lighter throughout a Grand Prix for several reasons. Fuel is burned, while the driver also loses some body weight through fluids. Components such as brake pads and discs lose material during braking, while the floor can gradually wear as it makes contact with the track surface.

 

The tyres also become lighter as rubber is gradually worn away during the race.

 

All of these factors are taken into account by teams when calculating the expected finishing weight of their cars. Despite those calculations, Russell’s Mercedes ultimately fell below the FIA’s minimum requirement.

 

What made the incident even more heartbreaking was that Russell had driven an almost flawless race and had beaten Hamilton on the road through an alternative strategy.

 

Instead of celebrating a major victory at one of Formula 1’s most famous circuits, he was left with the disappointment of seeing his hard-earned result removed from the record books.

 

For Russell, the Belgian Grand Prix remains a painful reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in Formula 1. A brilliant strategic gamble had appeared to deliver a stunning victory, only for a technical infringement discovered after the race to erase it completely.

 

The incident remains one of the most brutal disqualifications of Russell’s career and highlights the importance of even the smallest technical details in Formula 1.
