Just In: Mercedes star makes F1 comeback as Alpine complete massive signing.

Alpine have made a major move behind the scenes by bringing former Mercedes technical director Mike Elliott back into Formula 1, adding one of the sport’s most experienced technical figures to their leadership structure.

The Enstone-based team confirmed Elliott’s appointment on Thursday, marking his return to the paddock nearly three years after he departed Mercedes. He will take up the role of chief technical officer and will be responsible for leading and overseeing Alpine’s technical and engineering operations at its Enstone factory. 

The signing represents a significant addition to Alpine’s technical department as the team continues its efforts to close the performance gap to the leading teams. Elliott arrives with more than two decades of Formula 1 experience, having previously worked at McLaren and Renault before joining Mercedes in 2012.

His career at Mercedes became closely associated with one of the most successful periods in the team’s history. Elliott initially served in senior aerodynamic and technical positions before becoming Mercedes’ technical director in 2021.

He later exchanged roles with James Allison in 2023, becoming Mercedes’ chief technical officer. However, his time at the team came to an end later that year when he decided to step away from the organisation after more than a decade. 

At the time of his departure, Elliott explained that he wanted to take a break after spending 23 years working continuously in Formula 1 before considering his next challenge.

Now, that next challenge has arrived.

Alpine believe Elliott’s experience can help accelerate the team’s development at a crucial stage of its Formula 1 project. The team described him as an engineer with a proven record and highlighted his contribution to eight Constructors’ and eight Drivers’ championships during his career.

His arrival comes as Alpine attempt to build greater consistency and move closer to the teams fighting regularly at the front of the grid.

The timing is particularly interesting because Formula 1 has entered a new technical era in 2026, with major changes to both chassis and power-unit regulations. Alpine are also using Mercedes power units and gearboxes under a multi-year agreement that runs from 2026 until at least 2030. 

That existing relationship between Alpine and Mercedes makes Elliott’s appointment even more notable. Although his new responsibilities will be at Enstone, his knowledge of Mercedes’ technical philosophy and experience working under previous regulations could prove valuable as Alpine develop their own direction.

Alpine have been undergoing a broader transformation in recent seasons, with changes in leadership, technical personnel and their power-unit strategy. The team is aiming to establish a stronger foundation rather than relying solely on short-term improvements.

Elliott’s arrival therefore gives Alpine another experienced figure to help shape that long-term project.

The former Mercedes technical director will also have the task of working with Alpine’s existing engineering personnel and helping coordinate the various technical departments. His role is not simply focused on producing a faster car; it involves overseeing the wider technical operation and ensuring that the team’s development programme works efficiently.

For Alpine, the appointment is another indication of the ambition behind their current rebuild.

Elliott’s reputation was strengthened during his Mercedes years, where he worked alongside figures including Toto Wolff and played a role in an organisation that collected multiple championships. Wolff previously described him as one of the pillars of Mercedes’ achievements and praised his technical ability and contribution to the team’s culture. 

His return also adds another intriguing storyline to the 2026 Formula 1 season. Rather than returning as a driver, Elliott is coming back in a senior engineering position where his influence could extend across Alpine’s future car development.

The team will now hope that his experience can translate into measurable progress on the circuit.

With Formula 1’s competitive order continuing to evolve under the new regulations, Alpine’s challenge is to turn their investment in technical expertise into stronger performances.

Elliott’s appointment will not instantly transform the team’s fortunes, but it gives Alpine a highly experienced figure at the heart of its technical operation.

For a team determined to close the gap to the established front-runners, his return could become an important part of the next chapter of Alpine’s Formula 1 project.
