Drama has erupted at the Italian Grand Prix following qualifying at Monza, with post-session FIA investigations creating fresh uncertainty over the starting order.

Qualifying had already delivered a major shake-up, but attention quickly turned to the stewards as several incidents were reviewed after the chequered flag. At the time of writing, however, the FIA-confirmed information does not establish a double disqualification from Formula 1 qualifying at Monza.

 

One of the biggest confirmed developments involved McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Although the Australian qualified third, he was subsequently handed a three-place grid penalty after stewards ruled that he had impeded Liam Lawson during qualifying. As a result, Piastri is set to start the Italian Grand Prix from sixth.

 

The penalty has significant consequences for the front of the grid, with drivers behind Piastri gaining positions ahead of Sunday’s race.

 

Monza is traditionally one of the most demanding circuits on the F1 calendar, with teams running low-downforce setups to maximise straight-line speed. That makes qualifying incidents particularly important, because even a small penalty can dramatically alter a driver’s starting position.

 

McLaren will now have to focus on race execution, with Piastri facing the challenge of fighting back from outside the top three despite having qualified strongly.

 

The situation also underlines how quickly the classification can change after qualifying. FIA stewards can investigate incidents after the session, meaning the provisional order is not always the final starting grid.

 

Fans should therefore be cautious with reports claiming that two Formula 1 drivers have already been disqualified from the Italian Grand Prix qualifying session unless an official FIA document confirms it.

 

With the race approaching, all eyes will be on the final starting grid and whether any further FIA decisions could produce another late change.
