Formula 1’s Monaco Grand Prix continues to generate headlines months after the race, with Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli both linked to FIA-related penalties as the final classification remains a subject of scrutiny.
Russell endured a difficult afternoon around the streets of Monte Carlo, receiving a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. The situation became even more complicated when he failed to serve the penalty correctly, resulting in a drive-through penalty that significantly affected his finishing position.
Mercedes subsequently challenged the decision, requesting a Right of Review from the FIA in an attempt to have the circumstances surrounding Russell’s penalties reconsidered. The governing body accepted the request, opening the door to a further examination of the Monaco result.
The Monaco Grand Prix was already one of the most dramatic races of the 2026 season. Kimi Antonelli dominated proceedings to secure his fifth consecutive victory, while a series of incidents, penalties and late developments created uncertainty further down the order.
Antonelli himself is also facing a separate grid penalty later in the season. Mercedes has confirmed that the Italian will take a penalty at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza following a planned engine change. Team principal Toto Wolff explained that the decision was connected to Mercedes’ power-unit management rather than an on-track offence.
Meanwhile, the FIA’s handling of the Monaco penalties has already produced one significant change. Pierre Gasly initially lost a potential podium after receiving two five-second penalties for pit-lane speeding. Alpine successfully pursued a Right of Review, with the FIA later overturning the penalties and restoring Gasly to third place.
That decision has increased attention on the outstanding review involving Russell and Mercedes. Any change to the British driver’s penalty could potentially alter the Monaco classification once again.
For now, Antonelli remains the official Monaco winner, while Russell’s controversial penalty continues to attract attention. With the FIA reviewing the circumstances surrounding the case, Formula 1 fans will be watching closely for confirmation of whether any further changes will be made to the final result.
