F1 News Today: Russell and Antonelli Face FIA Penalties as Late Monaco GP Result Set for Confirmation

The 2026 Monaco Grand Prix is once again at the centre of an FIA controversy, with the final classification still hanging in the balance weeks after Kimi Antonelli celebrated victory around the streets of Monte Carlo.

The latest developments are not about Antonelli losing his Monaco victory. Instead, the major unresolved issue concerns the battle for third place and whether Pierre Gasly will ultimately retain his podium position after a controversial penalty reversal.

George Russell was also caught up in the original Monaco penalty drama. The Mercedes driver received a five-second penalty for pit-lane speeding before the sanction was escalated to a drive-through penalty after the original punishment was not correctly served. Russell ultimately finished outside the points.

Antonelli, meanwhile, delivered one of the standout performances of his season by winning Monaco and extending his championship advantage. The Italian remains the central figure in Mercedes’ 2026 title campaign, although his future penalty situation is separate from the Monaco result.

The bigger legal battle involves Gasly. He was initially dropped from third to seventh after receiving two five-second penalties for pit-lane speeding. Alpine later produced evidence that the timing system had made an error, prompting the FIA to overturn the penalties and restore Gasly to the podium. Red Bull and McLaren subsequently challenged that decision.

The FIA’s International Court of Appeal has now heard the case in Paris, but a final decision is not expected immediately. Judges have indicated that they could take another two to three weeks to deliver their ruling. That means the official Monaco classification remains subject to change.

For Mercedes, there is also a separate penalty story developing. Antonelli is confirmed to face a grid drop at the Italian Grand Prix because of an engine change, while team principal Toto Wolff has indicated that Russell will also need to take a similar penalty, with the timing still being considered.

That development could have major championship implications. Antonelli currently leads the 2026 standings, while Russell remains among his closest challengers. Any grid penalty could therefore make the next phase of the championship considerably more difficult for Mercedes.

For now, however, fans should separate the stories: Antonelli’s Monaco victory remains intact, Russell’s Monaco penalty was a separate incident, and the unresolved FIA appeal concerns the final podium classification — particularly Gasly and Isack Hadjar.

The Monaco saga is therefore not finished yet. The FIA’s final ruling could alter the historical record of the race and potentially affect championship points, making the forthcoming decision one of the most closely watched verdicts of the 2026 season.
