Lewis Hamilton’s 2026 championship challenge has been hit by another Ferrari controversy, with F1 insiders questioning whether the team’s refusal to use team orders could ultimately cost the seven-time world champion a shot at the title. �

What has now sparked the biggest discussion, however, is what Ferrari could have done after Hamilton’s penalty.

Former Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer and former Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley both argued that Ferrari could have instructed Leclerc to ease off enough to preserve Hamilton’s position. Their argument is that a small sacrifice from Leclerc could have prevented Hamilton from losing additional championship points. �

But Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur rejected that approach, arguing that it would not have been fair to Leclerc after Hamilton had received the penalty. That decision has now raised a much bigger question inside the paddock: should Ferrari continue allowing Hamilton and Leclerc to race on equal terms, or should the team begin prioritizing Hamilton’s title bid? �

The argument is not entirely new. Earlier in the season, Smedley controversially suggested Ferrari might eventually need to make difficult calls in Hamilton’s favor if it genuinely wants to challenge Mercedes for the championship. His reasoning was simple: if Hamilton and Leclerc continue taking points away from each other while Antonelli builds his advantage, Ferrari could weaken its own title chances. �
