Verstappen Battles with Illness at Dutch Gp after a qualifying… see details

Max Verstappen has revealed that he has been battling illness throughout the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, adding another challenge to what has already been a difficult home race for the Red Bull driver.

The four-time Formula 1 world champion was expected to enjoy a special weekend at Zandvoort, particularly with this set to be his final Dutch Grand Prix before the championship heads into a new phase of his career. Verstappen recently committed his future to Red Bull with a contract extension that will keep him with the team until 2030.

However, his weekend has not gone according to plan. Verstappen could manage only seventh place in qualifying for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix after finishing sixth in the Sprint earlier on Saturday. The result leaves him facing a difficult task if he is to challenge for victory at his home event.

Following qualifying, Verstappen admitted that he has not been feeling well throughout the weekend.

During his usual post-session interview with Viaplay, the Dutchman initially focused on his car’s performance. He explained that the balance of the Red Bull remained a major issue, similar to what he experienced during the previous session.

Discussing the conditions during the final part of qualifying, Verstappen said the car was sliding too much and suggested that his tyres were not quite warm enough. He acknowledged that there was little more he could have done under the circumstances.

However, Viaplay presenter Chiel van Koldenhoven then shifted the focus to Verstappen’s health after noticing that the Red Bull star did not appear to be at his best.

Asked directly about his wellbeing, Verstappen confirmed that he had been struggling throughout the weekend.

“I haven’t been feeling good all weekend,” the Dutch driver admitted.

When asked whether his condition was particularly serious, Verstappen played down the situation but made it clear that he was genuinely ill.

“I just don’t feel right. I’m simply sick – like anyone does when they’re ill,” he explained.

The admission provides some context for Verstappen’s subdued appearance during the interviews and his struggles to extract maximum performance from the Red Bull.

Despite feeling unwell, Verstappen does not believe his illness will significantly affect his ability to compete in Sunday’s Grand Prix. Instead, he expects the bigger challenge to come from the lack of pace currently shown by his Red Bull.

The Dutchman therefore appears to have realistic expectations heading into the race. Rather than promising an unlikely comeback, he believes Red Bull must concentrate on maximizing its performance and executing its own strategy.

“We’re simply short on pace, so we need to concentrate on running our own race,” Verstappen said.

With the support of his home crowd behind him, Verstappen will now hope to overcome both his illness and Red Bull’s pace deficit. Starting seventh means he faces a significant challenge, but the reigning four-time world champion will be determined to fight for the strongest result possible at Zandvoort.
