FIA Stewards Summon F1 Star After Dutch GP Sprint Qualifying

Carlos Sainz has been summoned by the FIA stewards following an incident during Sprint Qualifying for the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, adding another complication to a difficult Friday for the Williams driver.

Sainz endured a challenging session and was unable to progress beyond SQ1. He eventually qualified 18th for Saturday’s 100-kilometre Sprint, leaving him with plenty of work to do if he is to fight his way forward during the opening race of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.

The situation became more serious after the FIA stewards called Sainz to appear before them over an alleged breach involving driving unnecessarily slowly during Sprint Qualifying. The investigation means his starting position could potentially come under scrutiny, depending on the stewards’ findings.

Sainz’s difficult afternoon followed an equally frustrating practice session. The Williams driver had several excursions into the gravel and finished FP1 down in 22nd position. Williams also reported that his car had suffered floor damage following one of the earlier incidents.

During Sprint Qualifying, Sainz managed to improve his final attempt, setting a 1:14.738 lap. However, the improvement was not enough to secure a place in SQ2, with the Spaniard missing out by around a tenth of a second.

His troubles contrasted sharply with the front of the field, where George Russell produced an impressive performance for Mercedes. Russell claimed Sprint pole with a 1:11.567, edging Lando Norris by just 0.041 seconds. Charles Leclerc qualified third, while Oscar Piastri and Kimi Antonelli completed the top five.

Max Verstappen qualified sixth, while Lewis Hamilton took seventh, setting up an intriguing Sprint on Saturday.

For Sainz, however, attention will first turn to the stewards. Being summoned does not automatically mean that a driver will receive a penalty. The FIA must consider the circumstances and evidence before reaching a decision.

The incident therefore leaves Sainz waiting for clarification while Williams prepares for Saturday’s Sprint. With the team already facing a difficult start to the weekend, any further setback could make his task at Zandvoort even more demanding.

The Dutch Grand Prix Sprint is scheduled for Saturday, giving Sainz an opportunity to put Friday’s difficulties behind him and fight back on track.
