FIA confirms shock Italian GP penalty that reshape final classification 

The FIA has confirmed a fresh penalty-related development following a dramatic 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where Kimi Antonelli produced one of the most remarkable recoveries in recent Formula 1 history.

Antonelli entered his home race facing a 30-place grid penalty after Mercedes used additional power-unit elements outside the permitted allocation. The sanction forced the championship leader to start from 19th on the grid, despite his strong qualifying performance.

What followed was extraordinary. Antonelli charged through the field during a chaotic 53-lap race, eventually overtaking Mercedes teammate George Russell late in the contest to claim victory in front of the passionate Monza crowd. The FIA confirmed his victory after the race, with Russell finishing second and Max Verstappen third.

The penalty that initially appeared to have ruined Antonelli’s weekend therefore became the backdrop to one of the biggest performances of his career.
Antonelli was not the only driver affected by FIA sanctions at Monza. Liam Lawson received a 35-place grid penalty following Red Bull’s decision to introduce additional power-unit elements. Because the penalty exceeded the maximum number of positions available, Lawson was effectively sent to the rear of the field, while further changes after qualifying resulted in a pit-lane start.

Alex Albon was also hit with a 20-place grid penalty for additional power-unit elements, forcing the Williams driver towards the back of the field.

Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri received a three-place grid penalty after stewards ruled that he had impeded Lawson during qualifying. The McLaren driver had qualified third but was subsequently dropped down the order.

The weekend also featured a dramatic early-race red flag after Charles Leclerc crashed heavily at the Parabolica, although the Ferrari driver was able to walk away from the incident following a medical check.

With Antonelli overcoming his huge grid penalty to win at Monza, the FIA’s decisions ultimately became a major storyline of an Italian Grand Prix packed with incidents, penalties and championship implications.
