Lewis Hamilton Promotion Claims Spark FIA Confusion — Ferrari Star Remains Fifth

21 August 2026

Lewis Hamilton has once again become the centre of an F1 talking point after claims began circulating about a possible promotion following a shock FIA decision.

But fans should be very clear: Lewis Hamilton has NOT been promoted. His position remains fifth.

There has been no confirmed FIA ruling that changes Hamilton’s official classification from fifth in the relevant Hungarian Grand Prix result. Hamilton crossed the finish line fourth, but his five-second penalty for pit-lane speeding was applied to his final classification, leaving him fifth behind Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc.

The confusion appears to come from the way F1 penalties and post-race decisions can sometimes change the classification. When another driver is disqualified or penalised, drivers behind them can be promoted automatically — something that has happened in F1 before. However, there is currently no confirmed decision that promotes Hamilton from fifth in this case.

That means any social-media post or headline claiming that Hamilton has officially been moved higher should be treated with caution unless it is backed by an official FIA classification.

Hamilton’s Hungarian Grand Prix weekend was already dramatic. He had started the event with a three-place grid penalty after stewards ruled that he had impeded Oscar Piastri during qualifying. That penalty dropped him to fifth on the starting grid.

Then, during the race, another five-second penalty for exceeding the pit-lane speed limit ultimately affected his finishing position. Reports noted that Hamilton had been running fourth on the road before the penalty moved him behind Leclerc in the final classification.

So, despite the dramatic rumours surrounding a supposed FIA “shock” decision, the reality is straightforward:

Lewis Hamilton remains fifth. He has not been promoted.

Fans should therefore avoid treating claims of a Hamilton promotion as confirmed news unless the FIA officially announces a change to the classification.

For now, the seven-time world champion’s Hungarian Grand Prix result stands as P5.

Bottom line: If you hear that Lewis Hamilton has been promoted because of a new FIA disqualification, that claim is not true based on the confirmed information currently available. Hamilton remains fifth.
