F1 2026 Italian GP Results After Late FIA Drama as Lewis Hamilton Is Hit by a Brutal Post-Race Blow

The 2026 Italian Grand Prix delivered one of the most dramatic races of the season at Monza, with Kimi Antonelli producing a sensational comeback victory while Lewis Hamilton was left to settle for sixth after Ferrari’s home race descended into chaos.

Antonelli entered the weekend facing an almost impossible task. After taking a grid penalty for an engine-related power-unit change, the Mercedes championship leader started the race from 19th position.

But what followed was extraordinary.

The 20-year-old Italian carved his way through the field before eventually catching Mercedes team-mate George Russell. With just a handful of laps remaining, Antonelli completed the decisive move and crossed the finish line to claim a historic victory in front of his home crowd.

The result made Antonelli the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. It was also a devastating result for Russell, who had looked capable of taking advantage of Antonelli’s penalty and closing the championship gap. Instead, Antonelli extended his advantage.

Ferrari’s Monza nightmare

Ferrari’s home race could hardly have gone worse.

Charles Leclerc started third but crashed heavily during the early stages of the race after losing control at the Parabolica. The incident brought out the red flag and forced a lengthy interruption while the tyre barriers were repaired.

Thankfully, Leclerc escaped the crash without serious injury.

Hamilton had already suffered during the opening phase of the race after his battle with Leclerc at the first corner sent him wide and cost him several positions. By the time of the red flag, the Ferrari driver had fallen deep into the field.

Hamilton ultimately recovered to sixth place, but that result represented another disappointing afternoon for Ferrari at its most important home event. The Briton had been hoping to challenge at the front after showing strong pace during practice, yet the race never developed in Ferrari’s favour.

The post-race situation has also generated significant FIA discussion, particularly because several drivers entered the weekend under penalties and the starting order had already been heavily reshaped before lights out. Oscar Piastri, for example, was dropped from third to sixth after receiving a three-place grid penalty for impeding Liam Lawson. Antonelli, Albon and Lawson were also affected by power-unit penalties.

However, there is no reliable confirmation in the latest sources that Lewis Hamilton was disqualified from the Italian Grand Prix or thrown to the back after the race. His confirmed race classification is sixth.

That distinction is important because social media reports are already circulating claims of a major Hamilton disqualification. At the moment, those claims should not be presented as an official FIA verdict.

For Hamilton and Ferrari, the bigger reality is already painful enough: a home Grand Prix that promised so much ended with Leclerc crashing out and Hamilton finishing sixth, while Mercedes celebrated an astonishing one-two.
