Kimi Antonelli Secures US GP Pole as Max Verstappen Joins Mercedes Star on Front Row
The FIA has confirmed the provisional starting grid for the 2026 United States Grand Prix, with Antonelli eyeing a potential championship triumph in Austin as Lewis Hamilton and George Russell prepare to start fifth and sixth.
Kimi Antonelli has secured pole position for the 2026 United States Grand Prix, putting the Mercedes star in a prime position to fight for victory and potentially clinch the Formula 1 world championship at the Circuit of the Americas.
The FIA has confirmed the provisional starting grid for Sunday’s race in Austin, Texas, with several drivers receiving revised positions following the application of grid penalties.
Antonelli delivered a strong performance during Saturday’s qualifying session to claim the top spot, setting up a crucial race that could define his championship campaign.
However, the 19-year-old’s title ambitions depend on more than simply converting pole position into victory.
Antonelli faces potential championship showdown
Antonelli has a mathematical opportunity to secure the championship in Austin, but he needs a combination of results to fall in his favour.
The Mercedes driver must win Sunday’s race while George Russell finishes ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton ends the race fifth or lower.
Russell will start sixth, directly behind Hamilton, who lines up fifth for Ferrari. Both drivers therefore remain in positions that could complicate Antonelli’s title ambitions.
With the championship potentially within reach, the opening laps could prove decisive. Antonelli will need a clean start and a strong race strategy to keep his rivals behind while managing the pressure of a high-stakes afternoon.
Verstappen starts alongside Antonelli
Max Verstappen will start second, alongside Antonelli on the front row, giving Red Bull an immediate opportunity to challenge Mercedes for the lead.
Verstappen, who won last year’s United States Grand Prix, will be aiming to repeat that success and prevent Antonelli from turning pole position into a potentially decisive championship victory.
Red Bull also have Isack Hadjar in an encouraging position, with the Frenchman starting third. Charles Leclerc completes the second row in fourth for Ferrari, setting up an intriguing battle between Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari.
Hamilton’s fifth-place starting position gives Ferrari a chance to influence the championship fight, while Russell will be looking to move forward from sixth and protect his own interests.
McLaren face difficult starting positions
Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris will start seventh and eighth respectively, leaving McLaren with work to do if they are to challenge for the podium.
The positions represent a disappointing qualifying outcome for the team, which will need to maximise its race pace and strategy to recover ground at a circuit where overtaking opportunities can influence the final result.
Liam Lawson has been promoted to ninth, benefiting from a five-place grid penalty imposed on Racing Bulls team-mate Arvid Lindblad.
Lindblad will consequently start 14th, while Franco Colapinto and Gabriel Bortoleto have also been affected by FIA penalties.
FIA penalties reshape the US GP grid
The confirmed provisional grid features 22 drivers, with several changes influencing the midfield and the back of the field.
Colapinto will start 21st for Alpine, while Bortoleto lines up 22nd for Audi. Both face a difficult recovery mission if they hope to fight for points.
Elsewhere, Fernando Alonso starts 12th for Aston Martin, Oliver Bearman takes 13th for Haas, and Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon occupy 17th and 18th for Williams.
Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas will start 19th and 20th respectively for Cadillac.

All eyes on Austin as the lights prepare to go out
With Antonelli starting from pole, Verstappen alongside him and both Hamilton and Russell positioned inside the top six, the United States Grand Prix promises a tense battle at the front.
Antonelli has given himself the strongest possible platform to pursue victory, but the pressure will be intense from the moment the lights go out. Verstappen will be eager to seize the lead, while Ferrari and Mercedes must navigate a race that could have major championship implications.
The question now is whether Antonelli can turn his qualifying advantage into a victory — and whether the results elsewhere will be enough to deliver a title triumph in Austin.
