FIA Confirms Final Spanish GP Classification After Late Penalty

 

The FIA has confirmed the final classification of the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix after a late post-race penalty was applied following a dramatic race at the new Madring circuit in Madrid.

 

Kimi Antonelli emerged as the biggest winner of the chaotic afternoon, securing his eighth victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season for Mercedes. The Italian crossed the finish line ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris to strengthen his position at the top of the championship.

 

Antonelli completed the 57-lap race in 1:34:23.754, finishing 4.351 seconds clear of Verstappen. Norris recovered to third after losing the lead during a crucial Virtual Safety Car period, while Charles Leclerc and George Russell completed the top five.

 

The final classification was further reviewed after the race when Alpine’s Pierre Gasly was handed a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. However, the sanction did not alter his finishing position, leaving him classified 12th.

Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll and Lewis Hamilton were classified as retirements. Hamilton’s race ended after only six laps because of brake problems, adding another major setback to his difficult Spanish Grand Prix weekend.

 

The result gives Antonelli another major boost in the championship battle. The Mercedes youngster now holds a substantial advantage over his rivals, while Russell’s fifth-place finish leaves him 81 points behind his teammate in the drivers’ standings.

 

With the FIA’s post-race review now completed, Antonelli’s Spanish Grand Prix victory stands confirmed, while the attention of the F1 paddock turns towards the next round in Azerbaijan.
