Martin Brundle has delivered a strong verdict on the dramatic 2026 Italian Grand Prix, highlighting Mercedes’ strategy call, George Russell’s missed opportunity and Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable comeback victory at Monza.
The Sky Sports F1 analyst was particularly impressed by Antonelli’s performance after the young Mercedes driver produced one of the most remarkable drives of the season. Antonelli started the race from 19th following his grid penalty but fought his way through the field before securing victory at his home Grand Prix.
Brundle described Antonelli’s achievement as a remarkable fairytale, with the Italian becoming the first driver from his country to win at Monza since 1966. The result also strengthened Antonelli’s position at the top of the championship standings and gave Mercedes another important victory in a season that has increasingly become a battle between the two Silver Arrows drivers.
However, Brundle also raised questions about Mercedes’ strategy during the race. Russell appeared to be in a strong position to win after leading for a significant part of the contest, but a Virtual Safety Car created a crucial strategic decision.

Brundle believes Russell deserves an explanation from Mercedes over the decision. According to the veteran commentator, the situation was particularly painful because Russell had been in contention for victory before the strategy shifted the balance towards Antonelli.
The former Formula 1 driver also addressed the controversial opening-lap incident involving Ferrari teammates Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. The two came together early in the race, with Hamilton running off the circuit while Leclerc later retired after crashing.
Brundle’s assessment of the incident has generated further debate, particularly after former world champion Nico Rosberg offered a different interpretation. The disagreement has added another layer to a difficult Monza weekend for Ferrari, which failed to secure a podium at its home race.
