Kimi Antonelli has produced one of the most remarkable comeback drives of the 2026 Formula 1 season, charging from the back of the grid to win his home Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
The Mercedes rookie started the race from 19th after a grid penalty connected to an engine-related power-unit change. On a weekend when the championship leader appeared to have been handed an almost impossible task, Antonelli responded in spectacular fashion.
Rather than allowing the penalty to derail his home race, the 20-year-old Italian turned the setback into motivation. Lap after lap, he worked his way through the field, overtaking rivals and exploiting every opportunity that came his way.

From P19 to the front

George Russell found himself in a strong position for Mercedes and looked set to capitalize on his teammate’s difficult starting position.
Instead, Antonelli kept coming.

As the closing stages approached, Antonelli had completed the extraordinary recovery and was suddenly fighting for the race win.

According to Reuters, he became the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti’s victory in 1966.
That means Antonelli has ended a six-decade wait for an Italian winner at Monza.
For the Tifosi, it was the perfect ending to an extraordinary afternoon.
The young Mercedes driver stood on the top step of the podium at his home race, surrounded by an Italian crowd that had watched him transform what looked like a hopeless starting position into a historic victory.
The championship implications are equally enormous.
Russell had entered the weekend hoping Antonelli’s penalty would provide an opportunity to reduce the gap in the Drivers’ Championship. Instead, the opposite happened.
Reuters reports that Antonelli’s victory extended his championship advantage over Russell from 59 points to 66 after 13 rounds.
Russell ultimately finished second, while Max Verstappen completed the podium in third.
For Mercedes, it was a sensational one-two finish. For Antonelli, however, the result was much bigger than another trophy.
It was a statement.
The championship leader had been sent to the back of the grid at his home Grand Prix.
He was expected to fight simply for points.
Instead, he fought all the way to the front.
