Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana thinks minor issues are causing the team’s recurring problem of surrendering leads, following their latest 2-2 stalemate with Bournemouth at home on Tuesday.
Under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea has squandered 13 points from advantageous positions at Stamford Bridge this season and has managed just a single Premier League victory across their past seven matches.
This poor form has pushed Chelsea outside the top four positions. Against Bournemouth, they repeatedly missed opportunities to extend their lead, mirroring their performance in their previous loss to Aston Villa on December 27.
Reflecting on the Bournemouth match, Fofana described it as difficult, noting that despite their efforts, they couldn’t secure the win in the second period.
“We created several scoring opportunities that went unconverted. Finishing off matches is crucial—it’s a collective responsibility, not just the attackers’ burden,” Fofana explained.
The match saw David Brooks put Bournemouth ahead early, though Cole Palmer responded with a penalty. Enzo Fernandez appeared to secure victory with a brilliant strike, but Justin Kluivert’s unmarked finish before halftime salvaged a point for the visitors.
Fofana acknowledged the team needs improvement and analysis, expressing frustration about their defensive lapses while maintaining optimism given it’s still December.

He believes Chelsea are approaching better form, just lacking in fine details, and reflected that despite inconsistency, they’ve achieved Champions League qualification and won the Club World Cup.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s winless league streak has extended to 10 matches, dropping them from second place in October to 15th currently. Despite this, they’ve only lost once in their last five outings. Midfielder Alex Scott praised their improved performance and fighting spirit, particularly highlighting their set-piece goals and solid defensive display in the second half.
