Yuki Tsunoda Is Officially Back in F1… for One Race as Racing Bulls Make Shock Driver Swap
Yuki Tsunoda is officially back in Formula 1 but only for one race.
The Japanese driver is set to return to the Racing Bulls cockpit this weekend after the team confirmed a surprise driver swap involving Liam Lawson and Red Bull rookie Isack Hadjar. The unusual reshuffle has created one of the most unexpected stories of the Formula 1 weekend, with three drivers changing places across the Red Bull junior structure.
Tsunoda will take Lawson’s seat at Racing Bulls for the upcoming race, giving the Japanese driver another opportunity to compete on the Formula 1 grid. Lawson, meanwhile, has been called up to the senior Red Bull team to replace Hadjar, who is unavailable after suffering an injury.
The move represents a remarkable chain of events for the Red Bull family and puts Tsunoda back into the spotlight.
For Tsunoda, the opportunity is particularly significant because returning to an F1 race after being moved out of a full-time seat is never guaranteed. The 26-year-old has spent several seasons establishing himself as one of the more experienced drivers within the Red Bull system, and his familiarity with the Racing Bulls operation makes him a logical choice for the temporary replacement.
Although the arrangement is currently for just one race, Tsunoda will have plenty of motivation to make the most of the opportunity.
His return also adds an interesting storyline to a weekend that was already expected to attract significant attention. Tsunoda has previously shown that he can deliver strong qualifying performances and score valuable points when given a competitive car. His experience could prove useful to Racing Bulls, particularly as the team prepares for a weekend under unusual circumstances.
Meanwhile, Lawson’s promotion to Red Bull comes at a crucial moment.
The New Zealander will now have the opportunity to drive for Red Bull after being asked to step into the seat normally occupied by Hadjar. Lawson has previously raced for both Racing Bulls and Red Bull, making the promotion less unfamiliar than it might have been for another driver.
However, stepping into the senior Red Bull machinery brings considerably greater expectations.
Lawson will be expected to adapt quickly, work with the Red Bull engineering team and deliver a competitive performance despite having limited preparation time. The situation could also provide an important evaluation of his abilities at the highest level.
Hadjar’s absence is the reason behind the entire reshuffle. The young driver has impressed since entering Formula 1, but his injury means he will have to watch from the sidelines this weekend while Lawson takes over his Red Bull responsibilities.
The temporary change highlights just how interconnected the Red Bull and Racing Bulls driver programmes remain. Drivers can move between the two teams depending on circumstances, creating opportunities but also enormous pressure for those involved.
For Tsunoda, however, the immediate priority will simply be getting back behind the wheel and proving what he can do.
His return is also a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in Formula 1. A driver can appear to have moved beyond a particular chapter of their career, only for an unexpected opportunity to open the door again.
Tsunoda will therefore have little to lose and potentially plenty to gain.
If he performs strongly at Racing Bulls, his one-race return could generate fresh questions about his future and whether he still deserves a permanent place on the Formula 1 grid. A standout weekend could also strengthen his reputation as a dependable option whenever teams require an experienced replacement.
The pressure, however, will be considerable. With only one race currently guaranteed, every practice session, qualifying lap and race stint will matter. Tsunoda will need to settle into the car quickly and avoid mistakes while taking advantage of every opportunity that comes his way.
At Red Bull, Lawson faces an equally challenging assignment.
Replacing Hadjar because of injury means expectations will immediately be high. Red Bull will want a smooth weekend, while Lawson will be eager to demonstrate that he can handle the demands of a top-level F1 seat.
The unusual three-driver shuffle has therefore created an intriguing weekend for the Red Bull family.
Tsunoda is back at Racing Bulls. Lawson is stepping up to Red Bull. Hadjar is temporarily sidelined.
And while Tsunoda’s return is officially for just one race, Formula 1 has repeatedly shown that temporary opportunities can sometimes become much more important than expected.
For now, though, the Japanese driver has one clear mission: make the most of his unexpected comeback.
One race could be all he has been given but Tsunoda will know better than most that in Formula 1, one race can change everything.
