FOURTEEN seats still open – F1 Transfer Roundup

Formula 1’s 2027 driver market is entering an increasingly important phase, with teams beginning to make decisions while several seats remain uncertain. The latest F1 transfer roundup highlights the continuing speculation around Max Verstappen, fresh clarity from Audi and an official update revealing that 14 of the 22 seats for the 2027 grid are still not fully confirmed.

One of the biggest stories surrounds Verstappen and the possibility of him leaving Red Bull. The four-time world champion has been linked with a potential move to McLaren for 2027, with an exit clause in his current Red Bull agreement reportedly active. However, former F1 team principal Guenther Steiner has pointed to an important factor that could make such a move less straightforward.

McLaren currently relies on Mercedes for its power units, while Red Bull has moved toward greater independence through its partnership with Ford on its own engine programme. That could give Red Bull an advantage as the sport enters a new technical era. The engine situation may therefore become an important consideration if Verstappen seriously weighs his options for the future.

Audi has also provided an important piece of information regarding its 2027 plans. Gabriel Bortoleto, who has been linked with speculation surrounding Carlos Sainz, has indicated that he expects to remain with the German manufacturer beyond the current season.

Bortoleto described his agreement with Audi as a long-term arrangement and suggested that his future with the team extends beyond 2027. His comments could therefore complicate any potential plans involving Sainz, whose name has continued to appear in transfer rumours. Audi’s project, led by Mattia Binotto, is being developed with a long-term vision, making driver continuity an important part of its plans.

The biggest revelation, however, comes from Formula 1’s official update of the 2027 grid. According to the latest information, only eight drivers are currently listed as fully confirmed, leaving 14 seats marked as still to be decided.

McLaren has both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri confirmed, while Ferrari has Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton secured. Verstappen is also listed as confirmed at Red Bull, although his contractual situation means his long-term position remains a major talking point. Pierre Gasly is confirmed at Alpine, while Cadillac has Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas listed for its lineup.

Several teams consequently have major decisions ahead. Mercedes has both seats listed as unconfirmed, while Red Bull has one opening alongside Verstappen. Williams, Racing Bulls, Aston Martin and Haas all have their two seats yet to be officially confirmed. Audi also has both positions listed as open, while Alpine has one remaining vacancy.

Adding another twist, reports suggest Red Bull may have convinced chief engineer Paul Monaghan to remain with the team after previously being linked with a move to Cadillac. A reported counteroffer is said to have helped persuade him to stay.

With so many seats still unsettled, the 2027 F1 driver market promises plenty of movement before the final grid takes shape.
