  Tony Iommi has revealed the last exchange he had with Ozzy Osbourne came just hours before the Prince of Darkness died on July 22, 2025, aged 76. In interviews with _Rolling Stone_, _Guitar.com_ and SiriusXM, Iommi said Osbourne texted him the night before he passed. “He texted me the night before, funny enough, and said he weren’t feeling great and so on,” Iommi recalled. “But obviously, most of our conversations to each other have been, ‘How are you feeling? How’s this? How’s that?’ And so it was just another conversation.” He added that he assumed the tiredness was from their recent reunion show, and “didn’t expect him to go overnight. Blimey. It was a hell of a shock, really
 The text came less than three weeks after Black Sabbath’s “Back to the Beginning” concert at Villa Park, Birmingham on July 5 — a charity event that reunited Ozzy, Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for the first time in 20 years. Iommi said they both knew the stakes. During rehearsals Ozzy, who had been living with Parkinson’s, had to be helped in and could only sing a few songs before tiring. “I think he really just held out to do that show,” Iommi told ITV. “I think he must have had something in his head that said, ‘Well, this is gonna be it, the last thing I’m ever gonna do’”. Backstage after the gig, Ozzy rolled in on a wheelchair to say goodbye. “He seemed alright. He enjoyed it. And he said, ‘Oh, it went all right, didn’t it?’ I said, ‘Yeah, it did’”.

  Iimmi and Osbourne had stayed close through years of health battles, often calling weekly to compare ailments. “We did stay in touch a lot. And he was going through so many different things and constantly in and out of hospital… He stood by me when I was diagnosed with cancer. He called me every day”. That routine made the final message feel ordinary at the time. Looking back a year later, Iommi said the loss still hasn’t sunk in: “I watch him on YouTube and it feels like he’s still here with us”. For the man who gave Sabbath its sound, Ozzy’s last words weren’t dramatic — just a tired check-in, a fittingly human end to a 50-year brotherhood built on music, mischief, and looking out for each other.
