Hamilton’s resurgence shifts Ferrari balance

Lewis Hamilton’s long-awaited first Ferrari victory at Barcelona has sparked claims inside the paddock that the “Hamilton factor” is now weighing on Charles Leclerc. After dominating Ferrari’s intra-team battle for most of 2025, Leclerc has seen momentum swing the other way in 2026. Hamilton took back-to-back P2s in Canada and Monaco before winning in Spain, while Leclerc suffered a crash in Monaco and a qualifying accident plus late-race retirement in Barcelona. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher told Sky Deutschland that “the mind games between the two are starting” and that Hamilton is “doing it very cleverly” by pushing Leclerc psychologically. The pressure narrative was reinforced after Canada, where Hamilton outqualified Leclerc and finished P2, 30 seconds ahead. Former Williams engineer Rob Smedley said Hamilton “got inside Charles’ head,” noting Leclerc’s own admission it was “one of, if not the worst weekend of my career”. A Ferrari insider quoted by PlanetF1 also claimed Leclerc is feeling “psychological pressure” against Hamilton. Leclerc himself acknowledged the struggle after Barcelona: “I’m not at the level I want to be at, I need to find more performance”, and “I’ve got to be with him up there – which hasn’t been the case since Canada”. However, he has rejected the idea Ferrari is now built around Hamilton, insisting “it’s not that I feel limited in any kind of way with that” and that setup freedom means “I don’t have a fundamental problem with the care

Team playing it down as title fight slips away

Despite the tension, both drivers say their relationship remains solid. After a first-lap clash at Monza where Leclerc pushed Hamilton wide, the pair held “face to face” talks and “squashed it”, with Leclerc admitting he “went too far”. Ferrari sit P2 in the constructors’ championship, 122 points behind Mercedes, with Hamilton P3 and Leclerc further back after recent DNFs. Team principal Fred Vasseur previously said Hamilton’s arrival helped Leclerc “release some pressure” and mature, but in 2026 the dynamic has flipped. With Hamilton now scoring and Leclerc chasing confidence, the seven-time champion’s experience and resurgence may be the biggest psychological test Leclerc has faced in red.
