Lewis Hamilton has climbed one position in the final classification of the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix after the FIA confirmed the disqualification of a rival driver following post-race technical inspections at the Hungaroring.
The ruling, issued several hours after the race concluded, reshaped the official results and handed Hamilton an additional championship point, adding another twist to a dramatic weekend filled with penalties, strategic battles, and close competition.
Driving for Ferrari, Hamilton had already impressed with a determined recovery after serving a grid penalty before the race. The seven-time world champion produced a measured drive through the field, combining strong pace, smart tyre management, and well-executed strategy calls from the Ferrari pit wall.
Although he narrowly missed out on a higher finish on track, the FIA’s post-race verdict has now elevated him one place in the final standings, rewarding his efforts with a stronger result.
The governing body reached its decision after conducting its routine post-race scrutineering process, during which selected cars undergo detailed technical examinations to verify compliance with Formula 1 regulations. Inspectors discovered a technical breach on one competitor’s car, resulting in a violation of the FIA Technical Regulations.
While the issue was not related to dangerous driving or on-track conduct, the infringement was considered significant enough to warrant disqualification. The driver was therefore removed from the final classification, promoting every finisher behind them.
Hamilton was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the revised results, collecting additional championship points that could prove valuable as the 2026 title battle heads into its second half.
Following the race, Hamilton had already expressed satisfaction with Ferrari’s performance, praising both the team’s race strategy and the pace of the car despite the disadvantage of starting lower on the grid. The updated results now provide an even more positive outcome for both the British driver and the Scuderia.
Ferrari will also welcome the extra points in the Constructors’ Championship, where the fight with Mercedes, McLaren, and Red Bull remains exceptionally tight. Every position and every point could become decisive before the season reaches its conclusion.
For Hamilton, the promotion continues a promising run of performances since joining Ferrari. The Hungarian Grand Prix highlighted encouraging progress as he once again demonstrated the racecraft and composure that have defined his Formula 1 career, making calculated overtakes while avoiding unnecessary risks.
The revised result also underlines the strict nature of Formula 1’s technical regulations. Every car must fully comply with FIA standards throughout the race weekend, and even relatively small technical irregularities can lead to severe consequences.
Although post-race disqualifications are uncommon, they remain an important part of ensuring fairness and maintaining the integrity of the championship. A driver’s finishing position is never fully secure until all technical inspections have been completed.
With the Hungarian Grand Prix now officially concluded, Hamilton and Ferrari can take confidence from both their on-track performance and the extra championship points gained through the revised classification. As the paddock turns its attention to the next race, the team will hope to build on that momentum and continue its push in what is shaping up to be one of the closest Formula 1 seasons in recent years.
