The FIA has confirmed its verdict following an investigation into Williams driver Alex Albon after an incident involving Racing Bulls youngster Arvid Lindblad during the opening practice session of the Spanish Grand Prix.

 

Albon was summoned to the stewards after FP1 at the Madring circuit in Madrid, with officials investigating the manner in which he rejoined the track after running off the circuit at Turn 6. Following a hearing involving both drivers and representatives from Williams and Racing Bulls, the FIA stewards decided to issue Albon with a formal warning.

 

The incident occurred while Lindblad was approaching Albon at speed. Albon had been informed over team radio that the Racing Bulls driver was closing in on him and began paying close attention to his mirrors in an attempt to avoid getting in Lindblad’s way.

 

However, while concentrating on the approaching car, Albon failed to maintain the appropriate position relative to the yellow line in the runoff area. As he reached the edge of the circuit, the Williams driver accelerated and crossed the track in an attempt to clear the area quickly and prevent any interference with Lindblad.

 

Although the stewards accepted that Albon had made a genuine effort to avoid impeding Lindblad, they concluded that the Williams driver could have exercised greater caution while travelling through the runoff and returning to the circuit.

 

The FIA’s decision therefore stopped short of imposing a grid penalty or other major sporting punishment. Instead, Albon received a warning for the incident.

 

The stewards reviewed video footage, onboard camera recordings and heard explanations from both drivers before reaching their decision. Their assessment was that Albon’s intentions were reasonable, but his execution could have been safer.

 

The incident came during a busy opening practice session for Lindblad, who was also involved in another situation with two of Formula 1’s biggest names. The Racing Bulls driver reportedly expressed frustration after encountering Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli moving slowly on the exit of La Monumental, the distinctive banked right-hander on the Madrid circuit.

 

Despite the drama, Lindblad showed strong pace during the second practice session. The young Racing Bulls driver finished fourth in FP2, marking an impressive improvement as he continued adapting to the new Spanish Grand Prix venue.

 

However, his session was not completely trouble-free. Lindblad brought out the first red flag of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend after crashing at Turn 13, the left-hander that follows La Monumental. The incident interrupted the session and added further drama to an already eventful Friday.

 

Albon, meanwhile, endured a more difficult FP2. The Williams driver ended the session down in 18th position as Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli set the fastest time. Antonelli’s performance further underlined his strong form heading into the weekend, with the Mercedes driver arriving in Madrid as the current leader of the 2026 Formula 1 championship.

 

The Spanish Grand Prix is taking place at the newly introduced Madring circuit, which is hosting a competitive Formula 1 session for the first time. Drivers and teams are therefore continuing to learn the characteristics of the challenging new venue as the weekend progresses.

 

Attention will now turn to Saturday, when the drivers return to the circuit for the final practice session. FP3 is scheduled to begin at 12:30 local time, giving teams one final opportunity to fine-tune their cars before the crucial qualifying session.

 

Qualifying is set to take place at 16:00 on Saturday and will determine the starting order for Sunday’s race.

 

The Spanish Grand Prix itself is scheduled to get underway at 15:00 local time on Sunday, with championship leader Antonelli among the drivers expected to attract significant attention.
