F1 star is set to lose his job and Ferrari and McLaren are in a fight to replace him with ‘their guy’

20 minutes ago โ€” Esteban Oconโ€™s Haas future comes under major pressure

Esteban Oconโ€™s Formula 1 future has become one of the biggest talking points in the driver market, with his Haas seat reportedly under serious threat for the 2027 season.

Haas has yet to officially confirm its 2027 line-up, but the team is evaluating several candidates as it considers whether to continue with Ocon. The situation has become particularly interesting because Ferrari and McLaren are both pushing drivers of their own for the potential vacancy.

The two names at the centre of the battle are Rafael Cรขmara, a Ferrari Driver Academy prospect, and Leonardo Fornaroli, McLarenโ€™s reserve driver.

Cรขmara has received strong backing from Ferrari. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur reportedly confirmed that the Scuderia is strongly supporting the Brazilian prospect, including financial backing and extensive preparation in older Formula 1 machinery.

Fornaroli, meanwhile, has emerged as an increasingly serious option. The Italian is the reigning Formula 2 champion and joined McLaren as a reserve driver. Reports say his management is already working with McLaren to explore a potential Haas opportunity, allowing him to gain Formula 1 experience before potentially returning to the McLaren fold in the future.

That has turned Ocon’s Haas seat into something of a Ferrari-versus-McLaren battle.

Haas has a particularly close relationship with Ferrari, which supplies its power units, while McLaren sees Fornaroli as a driver with long-term potential. The American team therefore has several interests to balance before making its final decision.

There is also a significant test planned at Portimรฃo, where Cรขmara, Fornaroli and Toyota-backed Ryo Hirakawa are expected to be evaluated. Current Haas driver Ollie Bearman is also expected to participate as a benchmark.

Bearman himself appears to be in a much stronger position to retain his Haas seat. His connection with Ferrari remains important, with the Scuderia viewing the young Briton as a potential future Ferrari driver.

For Ocon, however, the situation is becoming increasingly uncomfortable.

The Frenchman has played down speculation surrounding his future, but reports indicate that Haas controls an option concerning his 2027 contract. With several highly rated young drivers now waiting for an opportunity, the experienced Ocon needs to convince the team that retaining him is the best sporting decision.

Importantly, Ocon has not officially been fired. Haas has not announced that he will lose his seat, so the current story should be treated as a developing driver-market battle rather than a confirmed departure.

But the pressure is real.

Ferrari wants Cรขmara to have a route onto the F1 grid. McLaren wants Fornaroli to gain a full-time opportunity. Haas must decide which direction best fits its future.

And if one of those young stars wins the battle, Ocon could be the experienced driver left without a seat for 2027.

The next major clue could come from the Portimรฃo test.

For now, the message is clear: Oconโ€™s Haas future is no longer guaranteed, and Ferrari and McLaren are already fighting to put โ€œtheir guyโ€ in his place.
