Amended F1 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Starting Grid Confirmed After Late FIA Penalties
George Russell will start the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix from pole position after the FIA officially confirmed the amended starting grid for this afternoon’s race in Baku, with a series of penalties dramatically reshaping the order behind the Mercedes driver.
The British star produced a sensational qualifying performance on Friday, putting together a lap that left his rivals struggling to match the pace of the Mercedes. Russell will share the front row with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who qualified second but finished more than eight-tenths of a second behind the pole-sitter.
The amended grid means several drivers will start from positions considerably different from where they qualified, with penalties for Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso among the biggest changes.
Russell’s pole is particularly significant for Mercedes as the team looks to capitalize on its strong pace around the challenging Baku street circuit. The 28-year-old has put himself in the perfect position to fight for victory, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli faces a much more difficult afternoon from 16th on the grid.
Antonelli’s qualifying session ended in dramatic fashion when the Mercedes driver crashed into the barriers during Q1. The incident prevented the championship leader from setting a competitive qualifying time and left him buried deep in the starting order.
With Antonelli currently holding an 81-point advantage in the Drivers’ Championship, starting from P16 could provide his rivals with an opportunity to reduce that margin.
Leclerc will line up alongside Russell on the front row for Ferrari, while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri starts third. Isack Hadjar will occupy fourth for Red Bull, with championship contender Lando Norris completing the top five.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton endured a difficult qualifying session and will start sixth for Ferrari. The British driver will have Pierre Gasly’s Alpine alongside him on the fourth row, while four-time world champion Max Verstappen starts eighth for Red Bull.
Verstappen’s position gives him plenty of work to do if he wants to challenge at the front, particularly with several fast cars ahead of him and the narrow, unforgiving nature of the Baku circuit.
Franco Colapinto starts ninth for Alpine, while Ollie Bearman completes the top ten for Haas.
The biggest movement among the midfield runners comes from Williams driver Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard originally qualified ninth but has been dropped five places to 14th following a penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags.
The penalty is a major setback for Sainz, who had produced what was described as a much-improved qualifying performance with the upgraded Williams. Instead of starting near the front of the midfield, he will now have to fight his way through from 14th.
Sainz’s Williams team-mate Alex Albon starts 12th, while Esteban Ocon takes 13th for Haas. Arvid Lindblad will start 15th for Racing Bulls, directly ahead of championship leader Antonelli.
Behind Antonelli, Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg will start 17th and 18th respectively. Valtteri Bottas starts 19th for Cadillac, while team-mate Sergio Perez has been pushed down to 20th following a three-place grid penalty.
Perez was penalised for impeding McLaren’s Oscar Piastri during qualifying. The Cadillac driver had originally qualified higher up the order, but the FIA sanction means he will now begin the race from the back-end of the field.
The Aston Martin drivers have suffered the most dramatic penalties of the weekend.
Lance Stroll will start 21st after a 20-place grid drop connected to multiple power unit component changes. Stroll took a sixth turbocharger, seventh energy store, sixth control electronics unit and eighth Power Unit Ancillary Component, triggering the penalty.
Fernando Alonso will start last in 22nd after accumulating a total of 30 places in penalties.
Before qualifying, Alonso had already been handed a 25-place grid penalty for taking a fifth engine, fifth turbocharger and ninth PU-ANC. The Spaniard then received an additional five-place penalty on Friday after taking another energy store.
As a result, both Aston Martin drivers will start from the final two positions despite the qualifying order potentially placing them higher.
The final grid therefore creates a fascinating mixture of front-running contenders, championship implications and drivers forced to recover from penalties.
Russell has the advantage of clean air and pole position, while Leclerc, Piastri, Hadjar and Norris will all be looking for an opportunity to challenge Mercedes at the start.
Hamilton and Verstappen, meanwhile, have work to do from sixth and eighth respectively, while Antonelli faces perhaps the biggest challenge of the afternoon as he attempts to limit the damage to his championship lead.
With the Baku street circuit renowned for long straights, heavy braking zones and opportunities for overtaking, the amended grid could produce plenty of movement once the lights go out.
The FIA has now officially confirmed the starting order, meaning there will be no further changes unless additional incidents or penalties emerge before the race.
