 F1 2026 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX: AMENDED STARTING GRID CONFIRMED AS LATE PENALTIES TURN MONZA UPSIDE DOWN

The Italian Grand Prix grid has undergone another dramatic shake-up after a series of penalties and late technical changes were applied ahead of Sunday’s race at Monza.

Pierre Gasly remains the headline name at the front. The Alpine driver secured the first pole position of his Formula 1 career, edging Mercedes’ George Russell to the top spot in one of the biggest qualifying surprises of the season. �

But behind them, the grid looks very different from the original qualifying classification.

Oscar Piastri has been hit with a three-place grid penalty after stewards found him responsible for impeding Liam Lawson during qualifying. The McLaren driver’s punishment promotes Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, giving Ferrari an even stronger starting position at its home Grand Prix. Hamilton will start fourth, with Leclerc fifth and Piastri sixth. �

The biggest drama, however, concerns championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

The Mercedes star qualified seventh but has been pushed all the way down to P20 after taking a 30-place penalty for power-unit component changes beyond his permitted allocation. His championship lead is therefore under serious threat, with Hamilton and Russell among those positioned to take advantage. �

Alexander Albon has also been affected by a major penalty, dropping to P21 following a 20-place power-unit penalty. �

And the late drama did not end there. Fernando Alonso and Liam Lawson have subsequently been moved to pit-lane starts following further changes that breached the relevant pre-race conditions. �

For Hamilton and Ferrari, this is potentially a golden opportunity. The seven-time world champion has moved up the grid without having to gain those positions on track, putting him directly into the fight near the front at Ferrari’s home race.

For Antonelli, meanwhile, the challenge is completely different. The championship leader starts from the back despite qualifying strongly, meaning his 59-point advantage over Russell and Hamilton could come under pressure before the opening lap is even complete. �

And then there is Gasly.

After losing a podium result in Monaco following an FIA appeal decision, the Alpine driver has responded in spectacular fashion by taking pole at Monza. Now he must defend against Russell, Verstappen, Hamilton and the Ferrari challenge on a circuit where slipstream, straight-line speed and strategy can completely transform the order.

Monza has already delivered the shock. The question now is whether Gasly can finish what he started — or whether Ferrari and the championship contenders will turn the amended grid into another major F1 twist. �
