Toto Wolff Issues Mercedes Warning as Rivals Close the Gap

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has admitted that the team’s early-season advantage has been reduced, warning that Ferrari and McLaren are now putting increasing pressure on the championship leaders.

Mercedes enjoyed a remarkably strong start to the 2026 Formula 1 campaign, establishing itself as the team to beat. However, Wolff believes the situation has changed significantly as the season has progressed, with rival teams making improvements while Mercedes has suffered several costly setbacks.

According to Wolff, Mercedes has potentially lost around 70 to 80 championship points through reliability problems and retirements. Those lost points could prove increasingly important as the battle for both championships intensifies during the second half of the season.

Wolff also acknowledged that Ferrari’s recent victories should not simply be dismissed as isolated performances. While he believes some of Mercedes’ own mistakes and reliability issues contributed to Ferrari’s success, he recognises that the Italian team and McLaren have made significant progress.

The Mercedes boss has therefore urged his team to remain focused rather than becoming complacent. The Silver Arrows are working on further developments, although Wolff indicated that the team must carefully balance upgrades for the current car with preparations for future regulations.

Despite the growing challenge, Mercedes remains firmly in the championship fight. Kimi Antonelli has emerged as one of the biggest stories of the season and continues to lead the drivers’ standings, while Mercedes remains at the front of the constructors’ championship.

Wolff’s latest comments underline a growing concern inside Mercedes: the team may still have the advantage, but its rivals are getting closer.

With the summer break providing an opportunity for teams to regroup, the pressure will be on Mercedes to respond when the championship resumes. The second half of the season could determine whether the Silver Arrows maintain their advantage or face a major fight from Ferrari and McLaren.
