Bernie Ecclestone Urges Max Verstappen to Join Ferrari

Former Formula 1 chief has revealed that if he were running an F1 team today, his first priority would be signing —regardless of the cost.

The four-time world champion’s future has become one of the hottest topics in the paddock despite being under contract with until the end of 2028. Reports indicate that Verstappen’s contract includes a performance clause that could allow him to leave if he is outside the top two in the drivers’ championship by the summer break.

Following the Austrian Grand Prix, Verstappen sits seventh in the championship standings with 73 points, well behind championship leaders and of .

Speaking during a press conference in Austria, Ecclestone said he would do everything possible to secure Verstappen’s signature.

“If I had a team now, the first thing I’d like to do is get Max onboard at whatever cost, because it’s cheaper than me trying to build a new car.”

The 95-year-old also admitted he would have advised Verstappen to make a sensational move to last year.

“I would have advised him last year to go to Ferrari,” Ecclestone said, while acknowledging that the Dutchman’s decision depends on carefully weighing the advantages and disadvantages of staying with Red Bull or pursuing a fresh challenge.

Ecclestone also defended Verstappen’s criticism of Formula 1’s current power unit regulations. The reigning champion has been vocal about the increased reliance on electrical power in the new engine formula, arguing that the changes have negatively affected the racing.

Backing Verstappen’s stance, Ecclestone said the rule changes were unnecessary and praised the Dutch driver for speaking out. The FIA has already confirmed it is considering adjustments for next season that would increase the role of the internal combustion engine in response to concerns raised by drivers and teams.

With speculation over Verstappen’s future continuing to grow, Ecclestone’s endorsement of a Ferrari switch is likely to add further fuel to one of Formula 1’s biggest transfer stories.
