Aston Martin’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend has taken a major turn after Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were handed substantial grid penalties for exceeding their permitted power-unit component allocations.

The FIA has confirmed that Alonso will receive a 25-place grid penalty, while his Aston Martin team-mate Stroll faces a 20-place drop following the installation of additional engine components on their cars.

The penalties were triggered after Aston Martin introduced several new power-unit elements ahead of the Baku weekend. Alonso received a fresh internal combustion engine, taking him beyond the permitted seasonal allocation of four. The two-time world champion also took his fifth turbocharger and ninth power-unit ancillary component, exceeding the relevant limits.

Stroll’s car was also fitted with multiple components beyond the permitted allocations. His AMR26 now features his sixth turbocharger, seventh energy store, sixth control electronics unit and eighth power-unit ancillary component.

Under Formula 1’s sporting regulations, exceeding the allocation of a power-unit component results in a grid penalty. The first infringement carries a 10-place drop, while subsequent infringements of the same allocation result in additional five-place penalties. When the combined penalty exceeds 15 positions, the driver is required to start from the back of the grid.

That means neither Alonso nor Stroll can avoid starting at the rear simply by producing a strong qualifying performance. Regardless of where they qualify, the Aston Martin pair will be forced to begin the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the back of the field.

The situation creates an immediate challenge for Aston Martin at one of Formula 1’s most demanding circuits. Baku’s long straights and opportunities for overtaking could provide both drivers with opportunities to recover positions during the race, but they will first have to work their way through the field.

The penalties also arrive after Aston Martin’s opening practice sessions produced mixed results. Alonso finished FP1 in 19th and FP2 in 22nd, while Stroll was 21st in both sessions. Alonso also spent part of FP2 in the garage as the team investigated a suspected oil leak.

With both drivers already guaranteed to start from the back, Aston Martin’s focus will now turn toward finding the strongest possible race setup and maximising overtaking opportunities.

For Alonso and Stroll, what began as a decision to introduce fresh power-unit components has now turned into a significant uphill battle in Baku.
