Charles Leclerc promoted in Hungarian Grand Prix final results after FIA penalty reshuffle
Charles Leclerc secured an improved finish in the final classification of the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix after a post-race FIA penalty for Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton elevated the Monegasque driver to fourth place.
Leclerc initially crossed the line in fifth after a challenging afternoon at the Hungaroring, where Ferrari struggled to match the pace of McLaren, Red Bull and Mercedes at the front. However, the official results were revised after Hamilton was handed a five-second time penalty for exceeding the pit lane speed limit during the race.
The sanction dropped Hamilton behind Leclerc in the final standings, promoting the 28-year-old to fourth and giving Ferrari a stronger points haul heading into Formula 1’s summer break. Hamilton ultimately finished just behind his teammate after the penalty was applied, missing out on what had originally been fourth place by less than a second.
Although Leclerc benefited from the revised classification, Ferrari endured a mixed weekend overall. The Scuderia showed encouraging pace in qualifying but was unable to challenge for the podium during the race as rivals executed stronger race strategies.
The revised result provided some consolation for Leclerc after a frustrating Grand Prix, allowing him to move up one position in the official standings without any on-track overtakes after the chequered flag. Meanwhile, Hamilton’s penalty added another setback to an already difficult weekend for the seven-time world champion.
At the front, Lando Norris claimed victory for McLaren ahead of Max Verstappen and championship leader Kimi Antonelli, while Leclerc’s promotion ensured Ferrari finished the race with a fourth- and fifth-place result instead of fifth and sixth.
